Favorite oil

I think l found the right oil for me. I went to my local auto parts store and asked the guy that they all turn to for answers. I told him l was looking for a 15-40 weight oil for a 440. He said that was a diesel oil. I told him about a lot of guys like it for gas engines. He said he didn't recommend it because diesels run under a lot more pressure than gas engines and thier seals are made differently and diesel oil could cause problems in gas engines. He suggested "Lucas Hot Rod & Classic Car Motor Oil SAE 20W-50 with high zinc"

I am going with HR1 10W-30. Conventional oil not synthetic blend. HR1 is high zinc, copper, etc. When you visit the Driven Oil site it does have some interesting comments on viscosity. We just freshened my max wedge motor that wasn't raced since 93. Back then used conventional oil. When we tore the motor down it was in great shape. So going with conventional oil. Just old fashioned I guess. There are no guarantees with any oil. Just a matter of choice.

I wonder if that part store guy is familiar with engines. He claims that 15-40 won't work, then recommends an even heavier grade? They may have much higher compression, but the oil pressures are about the same as gas engines.

For those looking for Brad Penn oil the name has been changed to Penn Grade ,same great oil ,same green color.

Personally, I don't think I'd put much faith in advice given by a parts store counter guy.

always interesting to read these responses. personally use mobil 1 esp with zddp for my 1970 361 HP rebuilt motor !!!!!!

ABSOLUTELY NO FAITH IN A COUNTER PERSON OPINION......based on how much actual experience with lubricants, their composition, viscosity, additives.....sort of the important criteria .....yes?
ALMOST as subjective as to which beer is best, is Bourbon (or Whiskey) best consumed neat, with water, with ice, which spark plugs are best, which coolant to use, which car polish is best, what thermostat is best, do you believe in thermodynamics and how a cooling system operates and what oil is best. In my case, the answers are: Fat Tire, Jack Daniels neat or with ice, Champion UJ-11G, Dexcool at 60%, Turtle Wax Ice, 180°, yes I believe in the science of Thermodynamics (Q = MCp delta T where Q is heat in Btu/hr, M is Specific heat, delta T is the log mean of the temperature difference between what is being cooled (or heated) and the coolant (or heat source) used in the heat transfer media and the time interval involved, MobilOne 10w-30 with added ZDDP. Or perhaps I should ask the counter person what is "best". I'm sure others will and do have their own opinions and preferences.

Is that similar to camel dung or is it more substantive in either texture, aroma or spread-ability and which do you prefer or is it 0W-20, 0W-40 or anything in between? BTW....yak fat is only available on a limited basis and for a limited time.....better stock up now....

OldRedDodge has it. VR1 20-50 for the unmolested 440 in my '69 R/T

"Boomer" Gen necessity ... Avoiding animal fat LDLs and the inevitable heart attack. Try safflower oil

Re: Rotella
That's one of the old redneck adages in these parts:
"I use Rotella in EVERYTHING 'cause it's got all the zinc I need" they say.
Well, not necessarily....
I tell folks all the time to do their homework on whatever EXACT blend of oil they want
to run because there are some blends of Rotella that have ZERO zinc in them.
With the way the oil companies are playing with formulations these days (and the ever
lessening demand for zinc and phosphorous in them, like it or not), you gotta do some homework
from time to time.
Google IS your friend in this particular case - but the old answer of "Rotella" isn't necessarily so anymore.

I AM That Parts counter guy! Many if use are car people too! LOL.... I was ASE certified for 25 years (84-2009ish) as well as I have had an Airframe and power plant license since 1990.... I currently work as the Retail Parts Pro at Advance Auto Parts.

All joking aside I use VR1 10w-30 in my 66 poly. The current Rottella T4 (conventional) has 1140 ppm of zinc, if my memory serves me. you should have 1200 ppm or better for flat tappet motors. I am not sure on the levels in the T5 (syn blend) or the T6 (full syn).

You are more the exception than the rule. Most auto part store counter guys/girls are simply sales clerks.

My Eyetalyun bikes get EVOO.
