Hope it's ok but this is pertaining to a Cadillac awd and why I am posting in the general area. I think the problem should be generic to a general awd drivetrain. Admin, if this is not ok, let me know and I will delete the post.

Just started noticing a whooshing/whirring noise coming from the rear end. (or at least it sounds like it's coming from the rear from inside).

These are the isolated characteristics of the noise.
-while driving, when pressing the accelerator, even a tiny bit, it makes a whooshing/whirring noise from the rear. I can pulse the gas pedal lightly and hear the noise go in and out. The tone kind of rises in and out with respect to the pedal if that makes sense. Not just an on and off.
-going through gears does not influence the tone or volume but the tone does gradually increase with respect to the speed of the car as long as the accelerator is still pushed.
-letting off the accelerator, the whooshing/whirring goes away but it is now making a different lower sound, not as loud. Also sounds like it is coming from the front after letting off??
-if you throw it into neutral, the noise completely goes away
-do not really hear it in reverse accelerating but once you let off the pedal and coast, the whooshing comes on. Not as loud though
-while coasting slowly down hill in gear and no acceleration, it almost sounds like bad wheel bearings faintly rumbling, but again if you throw the car in neutral, the noise goes away.

-changed carrier(differential) fluid and added LS additive. Oil was pretty dirty but the change made no difference. Going to change the transfer case fluid tomorrow but not holding my breath.

No other discernible noises like pulsations, clunks or rattles. No affect on driving.

Anyone ever run into this condition on an awd vehicle?

If theres a drive shaft involved. It could be a load of transfer to the rear causing the noise. Crown, pinion issue. Bearings going south.

when in neutral coasting theres no load on the gears.

Im just throwing this out there. Some of mine have gone through the same issues.

You do know that Joey has a Lincoln/Cadillac forum as well, right? I'd hit them up for some advice. https://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/forum/

You might want to state the specific model, year, etc.
That usually helps also...

Transfer case.

Been on a few Cadillac sites(including cadillacforums). Get the impression that most people don't work on their own Cadillacs much b/c the forums out there are like ghost towns in the maint. areas.

Just got back from the dealership and picked up the specific GM fluids just to be sure. Put in Mobile 1 first time but just to be sure I'm switching it out. That GM stuff if friggin expensive. Still need to do the transfer case too as soon as this all cools down. Maybe the TC is transferring noise through the driveshafts to the front and rear??

Pretty sure it is not exhaust or tire noise. Directly related to being in gear.

Dreading the thought that this is a bearing and/or pinion issue in the carrier. Not wanting to tear up the wifes car too much.

My buddy just totalled one of those well someone t boned him

Is he parting out or did he give it over to the junk yard?

Just to give a conclusion to this, it was the the rear differential carrier. You have to remove it to open it up and Cadillac does not sell any internal parts (you are forced to by the whole carrier) so did not go any further diagnosing exactly what went wrong in there. Have not opened it up yet, but from spinning it out of the car, it feels like the bearings.

Not a bad job replacing the carrier, 4 out of 10 I'd say. Def can do it yourself. Dealership wanted $3000. Picked up used one off a 2019 for $650 and done in half a day. Noise gone.
