Hey All,

I had my 383 rebuilt, I got it back from the builder in March. Its been sitting there without spark plugs in it and was wondering if rust could have formed in the cylinder's because of the humidity, I live in FL. I have a bag over it and put engine oil in it and turn it over regularly. I don't know when I'm going to put it in the car because its stuck in paint jail. I want to make sure I don't ruin the engine. Any other suggestions I could do to make sure its OK?

Thanks!

Squirt some Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders rotate the engine a few times, screw the spark plugs in it and you should be good. Keep turning over every few weeks, this should keep your cylinder walls clean.

What about when I start it with the mystery oil in it?

IMO put some plugs in it, just to seal it. Also put something over the intake to seal it. Continue to turn the engine on a regular basis. This may be overkill, but just an opinion.

Yes, I just put plugs in it and the intake was already sealed. I also put tape over the heads where the valves are.

First you don't need to get carried away with the mystery oil, a few squirts from the oil can in each cylinder and your golden. Be sure to tape off or plug any openings, i.e. Intake, exhaust ports, spark plug holes, etc. I just use some good masking tape to do this. Then cover it with old bath towels and then some plastic sheeting, you should be good to go.
I like to pre lube the engine with a drill motor and a oil pump drive shaft before I light it off. If you remove the plugs and crank the engine over most of the oil will get blown out thru the plug hole. The oil won't effect the combustion of the cylinders when you light it off, may smoke a bit at first but will clean up while your running it in.

You can buy a cheap endoscopic camera on the Internet that works with your smart phone and take a look inside the spark plug holes. Less than $10.oo and they work great!

I agree, shoot some Mystery oil in with the plugs out, spin it numerous revolutions with plugs out, put plugs in. When you get around to starting it, do the drill pre lube, manually turning over the motor to see oil up in the rockers on both sides.

Edit: Be sure to spin the motor with plugs out after shooting the oil in.
