When I was a teenager and first started working in my Dad's truck shop, PM's were my job. I spent countless hours heating zerk fittings with the torch to get them to take grease. Dad hated to replace a zerk fitting unless it was busted off. "It will take grease, get under there and heat it up". Those were the days.I spent many hours doing lube jobs and replacing those plugs with real zerks. Never replaced plugs after though, like it would never require another grease job! Properly lubed those joints did last longer in my opinion.

Remember it very well. Also, lived on a farm and my dad would come in at Noon for lunch and I had to gas up the tractor and grease the cultivator and clean off all the shoes. Lot of grease zerks on that front end cultivator. How many of us "younger" members start remembering when they had to work on or especially "had to grease" the gazillion fittings on those old cars?

My replacement knee joint is like new cars--no zerk. If it wears out, in goes a new one.I wish some of my joints could accept a zerk.....
Yep, one of my favorite times in life was working at a real "service station" just like you describe.ding ding, car in the drive up to the pumps. Good morning mrs smith.

Not nowadays! I've seen the poor schmucks down in the pits working in the winter with melting snow and salt water dripping all over them for 8 hours a day.Yep, one of my favorite times in life was working at a real "service station" just like you describe.

My Dad serviced all of the families garbage trucks. That nasty "garbage juice" dripping out of the packers. Makes me gag to this day thinking about it.How about doing a "semi" on a creeper in winter?lol. Dripping on ur crotch while greasing.
I believe it's the result of Chinese junk parts. Whenever possible, stick with Moog.Recently replaced ball joints and other front end parts. Pumping in the grease with a hand operated grease gun, I was determined not to pop holes in the new rubber.
Nothing doing, on at least two, the grease found its way out through tiny pinholes in the rubber, and I don't mean around the circle where it seals the joints from outside contamination but about middle of the rubber bladder. Did I just pump too hard? (that's what she said)
I was very disappointment in myself because now that grease will be oozing out and making a mess of my front end just like always.
Now I don't know if it was my fault or just poor rubber materials or if it is just plain impossible/unavoidable in the first place.
When I was 15 thru 17 YO every Saturday morning during the school year I did just that, only it was school buses. My dad had a maintenance contract with our local school. My first engine rebuild was a Ford 332 bus engine, when I was 15 (55 years ago). How about doing a "semi" on a creeper in winter?lol.
