360 Charger, is there an 8 3/4 rear from another, older B that will swap? Have only seen the car via pics and the owner says there an 8 1/4 in it.

Maybe it's a 9-1/4"?
I don't think they would put an 8-1/4" in with a 360.
It it is, yes you are going to have to change it at some point.

Yes a swap can be made. Search this site for a chart of 8 3/4" housing widths to see what is appropriate for your car.

Agreed, I know my 78 with a 400 was 9 1/4. If it is 9 1/4 than save yourself the effort of changing it unless you plan on NHRA(Cclip axles) sanctioned drag racing there is no reason a 9 1/4 wont hold up to as much power as an 8 3/4.

9 1/4 in my 2000 Dakota R/T 5.9 with 3.92 sure grip in a 4200# truck has held up just fine.

Including much "spirited" driving and quite a bit of towing.

I installed a 8 3/4'' under a 75 Charger. It was from a 71 Road Runner. Bolted right in.

I'd be surprised of it wasn't an 8.25. That axle is plenty strong for anything that 360 can put out (short of a blower and nitro). The 8 3/8 truck version (same thing basically but with a different name) was found in 1 ton vans in the 80. The 9.25 is as strong as a Dana 60, stronger than a 8.75. But the 8.75 has the lowest rolling resistance of any production axle so that is a very nice thing to have. The expense of the famed 8.75 in my opinion out weighs the ease and general availability of a stock axle. Suregrip differentials for a 9.25 are easier to find than an 8.25, and I'd guess less money than one for an 8.75.

my 77 SE 360 came with an 8 1/4. I put a 440 in front of it and hot rodded the hell out of it and it never failed. you'd be surprised how strong they are.
sure grips and gears are readily available for them

71-74 8 3/4 are some of the Hardest to find, second only to the A body unit IMO.

An E body unit will work (It's about an inch narrower) and is a hell of a lot easier to find and cheaper.

What he said.

When I swapped the 318/904 for a 440/727 in my 75 I left the 8.25 which oddly had 11" brakes but added SG and upped the gears to 3.21 - like 15 yrs ago and it's still tight.

My 78 magnum 400 had an 8.25.. swapped it out for a 9.25.. and here in a local junk yard there is a 76 cordoba 360 with a 8.25.

Yes, they did. Every day of the week. It is the standard rear for the small block in those years. There is no reason to change it out unless your building crazy power. The 8-1/4 is THEY most under rated rear bar none. It will take 450lbs. of torque all day long.

8 1/4'' rear is just as strong as a 12 bolt Chevy rear. Nothing wrong with using one.

my magnum 400 now has a O.D. 4 speed. Had to upgrade to a 9.25 with sure grip. And 3:21 gears. Beefy.
