This 1965 383 was in my coronet when I bought it in 2006. I have used and abused it until last year when I did my 440 and switched them out.
The last few years the 383 had a rattle simular to a skirt slap or wrist pin, never had the rod knock of death. lol.
it still had 130s compression and 20 / 50lbs oil pressure.
The single row timing chain had a lot of slack, crank end play was right at .025, side clearance rod to rod was .017 to .019 depending on what hole. plugs all looked tan.
but this is what I found...........
side note, I always changed oil and filter each summer with zinc additive.

I know looks pretty bad, hell of a ring grove, std. pistons and crank. It had at least one ring and bearing job some time in the past.

Well cranks out greased and bagged, block is greased and bagged. Heads will go in for the install of 1.74 exhaust valves and I will try the old pocket port. :D
If all that goes well they may find their way onto the 440.

Looks like crank scoring and piston skirt scoring. This may have been PO, since you were good on oil changes, etc.

Thanks for sharing

K & N ???

3 " Air and long oil both napa gold / wix always. rotella 15/40 oil and lucas zinc.
the scoring could be just from a dirty rebuild. but just a guess.

Yep, all that could have happened during break-in and the first 300 miles depending on the cleanliness of the build.

I have a 76 400 also so........... 10/10 the steel crank buy some pistons get a balance job and away we go lol.

Looks like the crank would take a .010/.010 pretty easy. Cylinders? Piston scratches aren't same as cylinder scratches. Small over bore with new good pistons would be great.

Yeh, the cylinders do not look bad, witness marks match the pistons , all the pistons looked simular as far as scoring. pretty good ring grove but all the pistons tapped out ok.
the 383 block would clean up, also have not measured inside they may be pretty egg shaped :D

It will be a winter project, heck you never know if mrs clause comes through I may get a 440 source gift card for that 438 kit
