Is there a specific way to take these retainers off without snapping the posts???

try needle nose pliers to unthread them while pulling upward
you can take a small screw driver and pry up on the tabs next to studs to remove them,then push them back down .
May be a set of L angle snap ring puller arm's in the set would help to relive the tension to pull them off.

I do what Davek said. Take your time. I use a tiny slotted screwdriver, slightly larger then what you use on eyeglasses. Lightly pry up on the tabs.

I looked at that wrong, the small screwdriver method will work, i have used a deepwell socket with a hammer to lightly tap them back into place when your finished.
