Car is a 1973 RR from Canada with factory undercoating. I don't why this strip was left the way it was. One of my shop helpers may have pulled something off, but no one remembers doing it. Maybe the PO removed something and then parked it. IDK The PO drove it to a spot in the yard and then it did not move for over 24 years. Just curious as what was there. It is painted now with a rust stop but it was bare steel, a little surface rust, but bare steel.
I am sure someone has the answer. Thanks in advance.

Most dont know this. But that undercoating was always a upsell from the dealers. Exhaust got taped off tires usually were never removed except for PDIs.

Looks like there was a piece of tape there and someone pulled it off or it just let go.

I can't believe, by looking at the underside, that it sat in a yard for 24 years. Looks very clean!

So you are saying code J55 UNDERCOATING $22.40 was done at the dealership in the states?

Yup, sat in his yard next to a small tree and never moved, rims sank into the ground a little and the oil pan was almost touching the ground when I pulled it out and onto the trailer.

There were factory undercoat and dealer undercoat. The factory undercoat was checked off on the order form and normally came with the under hood insulation.

The dealership undercoat was pushed on the sale of the car when they had a potential buyer and the car would have came in without undercoat. Z bar was another sales add on.

true. I was doing approx 8 a day way back when. I wonder if the factory undercoating was for certain areas of the country. Most I did never came with it. VWs were wax coated. For overseas shipping reasons.

I don't think any of the plants would undercoat a vehicle without having a order for it, then they would. The factory undercoat seemed to stick better than the dealership also. I always thought that the underside was contaminated with dirt and dust when it arrived at the dealership and the undercoat didn't adhere as well. I did my share of undercoating and drilling holes for the Ziebart too. I hated that job.

khryslerkid,
You are correct sir, it does have the under hood insulation

Okay, I thought maybe it was some tape that held the e-brake cables so they would not flop around before being installed. Guess I am not going to worry about "missing" something semi important. Just another Mopar mystery!

I'm just wondering if that wasn't a piece of masking that draped down over the rear and driveshaft to keep the undercoat spray off and the tape never came off until later on? Others might have that mark also.

The dealership undercoat was crap. It would stay soft ,collect dirt , dry out , moisture would creep in and the rust would begin.

The area under the two rectangle holes is where the bump stop on the differential would make contact. So, the rectangle hole on the left was the flex hose bracket for the rear brake line and you can tell it was mounted there but nothing on the other side so i would suspect there would not be a driveline cage attached there. So, hard to tell, but maybe there used to be something else attached to the diff that was making contact there. What bump stops do you have on your diff?

Cant say I paid any attention to it when I pulled it off. The bump stop and related parts are in a box in storage so I can't get a pick right now. The housing is here though. It is not a sure grip.
