Am I getting enough air?

On my 440, in my '70 Satellite, sits an Edelbrock 3/8" drop base air cleaner and a 14" x 2" air filter. I've done this because of the RPM intake. it just closes with the nut touching the under hood matting. Now this engine dyno'd at 488hp at 5400rpm, but it never sees that high of revs on the street when cruising. So I'm curious as to whether I am starving my engine for air. I really don't want to cut my hood, or put a different hood on. I like the stock look of my car. I can't fit more of a drop base unit on because this one already just touches the fuel line. Any thoughts or ideas?

If you aren't revving it that high, you're getting enough air. If you're really curious, try a couple of runs - with and without the filter. Leave the base on for both tests.

There was 2" of room from the top of the carb to the underside of the hood. That is why I had to use a drop base air cleaner and 2" filter. I don't know what they dyno'd it with, but it wasn't this air cleaner. Likely just a stack. I'll call and ask though. Thanks for the info.

If in doubt get one of the filter lids

I ran the formula, and at 5400 rpm it says I would need a 14" diameter air cleaner 2.14" tall. Once you're down to 5000 rpm, it's at 2". So it appears I've got enough air for safely 4500 rpm, but I like the idea of the K&N open top unit. As always guys, thank you.

Only issue I have with that kind of setup is the hot air being gulped into the engine. My results vary!!:usflag:

Ok, so let's say for a moment that I wanted to have a hood that allowed more fresh air to the engine, what options would at least be Mopar original? I'm thinking of two options. One, an entirely new hood that I can swap out with the original, or two, a fresh air intake that can be attached to the original hood, which would then become permanent.

If you only have 2" of room between carb and hood you are pretty much stuck with what you have unless you get a hood with a scoop, like a 6 pack hood. That 2"is going to be the restriction.
