Hi
My 440 Charger has TTI 2.5 h-pipe exhaust with Hi-Po manifolds. I have magnaflow mufflers and find it too loud. I am trying to decide if I should replace the mufflers or add some glasspacks before the mufflers. Has anyone tried this?....did it work?
Thanks

My dad did this, but the glass pack was right before the tailpipe. In other words downstream from the mufflers.

Is the sound resonating inside the car? I've run just resonators before but they were in the very back. No resonating inside and they actually sounded ok but most of my cars had a straight system. None had resonating inside but yeah, somewhat loud on the outside especially when punched. Saying a car is too loud is the same as saying turn down the rock and roll :D

LOL I know......sure sign of getting old! There is some droning at 2000 rpm, but it's load everywhere.

If it is too loud resonators will not help much.
Fit more mufflers. It will still run fine with 2 straight through mufflers.
Vibrant do evidently make a good resonator that will quieten but it is stainless and fairly large round shape.
Probably cheapest and easiest to just get another quality oval muffler fitted.

I agree.

If you fit any resonator, you will have to deal with changing your exhaust pipes, dealing with fitment issues, hangers, etc. It can be a pain in the butt to get an exhaust to hang right and fit well. Replacing the mufflers keeps the same system and fit you have now. There are a lot of muffler choices with a varied sound from them; you should be able to find one that does not drone.

For reference, I have a 500 CI engine with TTI 1 7/8" headers, a 2 1/2" Pypes X system and Pypes mufflers (though I forget which ones). I have no drone and a nice throaty sound without it being too loud for me.

Good luck,

Hawk

I'm going to preface this post by saying that when it comes to exhaust sound and tone, there are no absolutes. There are too many variables which contribute to exhaust sound db level, drone, or tone. I tell customers that want their car to sound like "that car over there" that if two cars had identical engines and exhaust systems, but one was painted red and the other blue, they would sound different.
But here's what I can tell you based on my personal experience and customer feedback-
1- MagnaFlow is probably the best of the straight-thru mufflers at controlling noise and drone, but you need some case length to get the noise to acceptable levels. In most cases, the 14" version just won't cut it. I'm guessing that's what you have. They also make the same muffler in 18" & 22" versions. The longer the case, the quieter the muffler and better the drone control.
2-Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers are generally regarded as being the best of the performance aftermarket Turbo mufflers for controlling noise and drone, but there are always exceptions. One customer of mine put the 20" Super Turbo's (#17748) on his '66 Coronet which has a VERY healthy stroked 383 with a lot of cam and compression. He ended up putting Dynomax bullet mufflers ahead of the mufflers which gave him a very acceptable noise level, but the drone was (is) so bad his wife won't ride in the car. He even tried 2.25" tailpipes to no avail. Point being, the Dynomax mufflers will probably help with the noise level, but may or may not be a 100% cure all for the drone. Hope this helps.

Did a similar thing last summer. Started with a set of flowmaster 40s and had an awful drone ~1800 rpm. Sounded neat at idle etc but inside it was totally obnoxious. Switched to a set of Flowmaster 50s and it improved quite a bit but still had drone. Then went and bought a set of resonators, they don't look like much, put them into the straight section of tailpipe as it goes by the gas tank. This made the whole deal significantly better. Then swapped out the 361 for a 426W and it got that much better. Very nice to drive now. I like a nice tone but never was a fan of super loud. If it's loud and you lose, you're a poser. If it's quiet and you lose, no one expected anything anyway. If it's quiet and you win you make the other guy look like a poser. If you're loud and you win they say you're obnoxious.

Question- Did you use Delta 50 or Super 50? Super 50 is advertised as the quieter of the two and my experience says that's correct.

I have a 1971 Challenger with the Dynomax mufflers the noise level is acceptable but there is a drone from 2400 to around 2800 rpm. Fine at all other RPM's
CMCE is right about every car being different.
I have had the most "luck" with Borla Pro XS

I used the delta. Can’t immediately remember the full logic but that’s what I did.

The Dynomax complete TTI system on my '65 Formula S has a drone around 35-40 MPH, otherwise sounds good at idle and cruising speeds.

The Thrush mufflers on my parents new '71 Road Runner were much louder than factory at idle, but not objectionable. At a 70 MPH cruise (3000 RPM) they were quiet. At full throttle acceleration they were loud as hell. Never a drone sound. The advertisement in the photo describes this early Thrush muffler as to having NO fiberglass to burn out. Those are what we had installed on the '71 described above and shown in the photo below (new owners, not in the family any longer).

Currently have a pair of Purple Hornies on the '72 Satellite 318 with side exit. A little loud at cruise, looking to add resonators some day soon. Never a drone sound. Sound byte:

David, what size mufflers do you have now? Not inlet and outlet but case size?

I would suggest hemi mufflers.
Dale's cuda shop has good prices.
I did find that adding Mopar style tips helped on my charger.
An h pipe would help as well.

I have 20 inch Magnaflows and a H-pipe. I'm thinking of going to the 20 inch DynoMax Hemi turbo mufflers #17748

If the mounting is close to stock as far as being compliant and movable, the 17748 will be smoother and quieter and less droney than the straight through Magnaflow. I have two almost new ones here but to ship to you would be cost prohibitive compared to what you can get them for from other sources.
