I need to gather some wisdom from you folks. Just a little background, I have built a few engines in my life, put in some clutches and that kind of stuff. I have never had any experience with transmissions.
So here is my situation: My 1969 GTX with 4 speed transmission has lost the ability to shift into 3rd or 4th. The linkages are hooked up and they move when the shifter moves. One of my friends says that it sounds like I broke a shifting fork.
Since I'm a decent mechanic, should I dig into the transmission and see if I can fix it or should I leave it to a person more qualified than myself?
Thanks in advance,
David

Very well could be, although sounds like a SYNCHRONIZER if it's while NOT RUNNING

Won't really know until the side cover is off. You could probably do it while it is in the car but I'd pull the trans and get it onto a bench.

Unhook both 1/2 and 3/4 linkage from trans levers and try manually shifting through the gears (spin the drive shaft if necessary). If the effort is markedly different between the two I would pull the side cover off and look for inside linkage/fork issues. Lots of miles? You may want to R&R and disassemble for inspection or take it to a knowledgeable shop.

I would dig right into it very easy to see the problem with the side cover off.

Thanks guys, I'm going out to try all those things that you suggested.
The car shows 48,000 miles, and according to paperwork, those are supposed to be original miles.
I appreciate your input and I will report back when I try these things.

Would say good luck but you dont need it bet easy fix with mostly work.

Put the shifter in fourth with the engine off and the parking brake released, see if the car will roll.

4-spds are easier than torqueflights. Go for it,,,,, you can do it with your background. Way less parts!

any metal will be in the bottom
do not turn sideways or upside down till you clean
you can put a big magnet on bottom of case

Pull the tranny and dive into it. They are not that difficult. FSM is a big help.

Wouldnt be surprised if it broke the 3/4 fork. It can be replaced by removing the side cover. No need to go further if it sounded good and shifted good before. Before pulling the trans. Drain the fluid first. Then a little brake clean in the fill hole. That will flush any debris. When reassembling the side cover the straight fork goes in the cover. The curved fork sets in the synchro sleeve. Use a skinny screw driver to align the curved fork into the side cover as you drop it down. Bolt it up and go.

Here is an update for any of you who might be interested.
We pulled the side cover off and found a broken shift fork. The shift forks seem to be made of brass or similar material. I ordered 2 new forks from Brewers (thanks for the recommendation) these forks are made of steel. We were able to use an extendible magnet to guide that fork right into the side cover as we put it back on. The whole job took a couple of hours.
We are rolling in all four gears again!
Thanks guys.

Thanks for the follow-up dhd76.

Yes indeed! I have a "slightly used" two-piece shifting fork for a souvenir!

Correct consultations from any of us gives us joy. Sometimes the internet consultation is not all that easy. Ya can't touch, hear anything over the 'net!
