I rebuilding the carbs on my GTX. I’ve cleaned one with CH50 which does a wonderful job of cleaning aluminum. However it leaves it too bare. Any ideas on something to coat them to keep them from picking up every fingerprint etc? I was thinking just Fluid Film rubbed in.

As pointed out in a previous post @Woodruff Carbs is a sponsor here and Bill @62MAX is a member, both of them do great carb work and are nice people, one or both of them may have some input that would help out.

The only way you will get a correct finish on an aluminum casting to look O.E.M. is glass bead, chemically clean and ceramic tumble.

Thanks for the replies guys. I want to see the car run this year so I think I’ll assemble them as is for now and do them right over the winter. The car was stored in a transport trailer for the last 20 years and it took its toll on the fuel system and brakes in particular. Not to mention the mice and mould in the interior. I’ve had the brake hydraulics stainless sleeved and expect to see them this week.

For cleaning I would not glass bead a carb , a bead could get stuck in a small passage and then your screwed . Soda blasting works fine . Rinse it out with water when done , works better than solvent.
Ultrasonic is the cats meow with the right solvent

What solvent? I have a ultrasconic and I cleaned a AFB with simple green and it turned out scuzzy dark grey.

I don't remember what the boss had in the ultrasonic cleaner , when I get over there I will ask him.
I have dipped carbs in cleaner called Berryman to clean off the crud and grease , they clean up but not as cast bright.

What is the CH-50 product, who makes it and where is it available and in what quantity. How is it used....dipped, soaked for a day or two? Please advise at your convenience.

CH50 is a DuBois Chemical product. It isn't available retail that I know of. It's a muriatic acid and quite concentrated. Spray it on, wait five and neutralize with water. Diluted versions can be found in truck stops for cleaning fuel tanks etc. Car dealers use it for a quick detailer for an ugly engine bay. Ask a parts guy at your local Mopar store, he may be able to get some for you. 5 gallon jugs that I know of.

I used Berryman Chem-Dip that I caught on clearance @ 9 bucks a gallon. Works OK for light soil, but it's nothing to write home about IMO.

Lol, When I first tried the Chem-Dip I forgot about and left a primary bowl in it for an hour or so. Came out with a goo residue over most of it and a chalky look. Destroyed what coating was on it.

THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATION.....i'll follow thru and see if I can buy some. FYI....muriatic acid is a commercial grade of Hydrochloric Acid. The strongest concentration available is approximately 32% as it a water solution of hydrogen chloride (a gas) absorbed in water to a saturated condition, where the solution cannot absorb more gas. A dilute solution of muriatic acid and water (~ 5% -10%) is sometimes used to clean masonry. Muriatic acid use to be available at hardware stores. I'll try it is a very dilute form, as strong acids (and alkali can dissolve aluminum)....thanks again for the info.

I've tried both the Berryman and the Gunk dip type cleaners....they are OK for general grud, vsrnish and grease but do nothing for refinishing the surfaces. Years ago there was a product called "Brush on Parts" (maybe marketed by Gunk/Solderseal) in a 5 gallon bucket about 4 gallons of stuff in a metal basket and upon disassembly, the entire carb could be submerged....really worked great.....BUT....gloves were required.....this stuff would take your skin off...it contained "chrysilic" (not sure of the spelling) acid......but due to environmental issues, it was eliminated.

I used to work in a lab in a paper mill. One night shift I touched a wart with Hydrochloric. Muther, did that burn. Cured it though.
