Hi folks. I have a unique opportunity to buy what appears to be a "true survivor" and I'd like some input. I have access to a 1966 Dodge Charger with the original (all numbers matching) 426 hemi. The car has 16K on the clock with all the documentation, including dealer sticker. It is an auto with power brakes and power steering. It was a one owner car that was acquired as part of a consignment purchase (the owner died and his family decided to sell his collection...my understanding is it was/is quite a collection...lol) and it "does not fit" with the purchaser's own collection so he is willing to part with it. The paint is original (mint condition and it is black :) ) and it was kept in a climate controlled environment by the original owner. There are just a few concerns. One is the radio...it is apparently an AM/FM and I know the 66 and 67 Chargers came with only an AM radio. I did some research (Google is my friend) and I get some conflicting stories as to what the origins of this radio might be. I have not yet seen the dealer sticker but it is possible that the AM/FM was added by the dealer but from what car in 1966 was it transplanted? As they say, the devil is in the details. I am told the windows are tinted. Again, I'm not sure if tinting was an option from the factory back then and if not, then would it have been possible that again this was a dealer added option? Also, it has power windows. Is that possible? I am also told it has the "optional wheels" and I have no clue what that means. I am awaiting pictures of the car and all the documentation. So, what do you all think? Any answers that might be provided would be welcome.

Im sure you could get tinted windows. They are not like modern tint. Also im dure power windows was an option. A rare one. The radio, i dont know why that wouldnt be an option as well. Good luck

Tinted glass was an option for the charger in '66

Power windows were also an option for chargers in '66
Thanks for that information. Looks like the only question is on the radio, and it is somewhat perplexing. Clearly if added by the dealer from another Mopar it would not have the EL like an original radio, correct?

Agreed, wife's '64 Vette vert had an AM/FM radio, OE.

Cant give advice. As with google at hand. That alone should tell you value and how well they sell. Besides. No pictures.

I had s 1964 Dodge that had dark tinting all the way around. Apparently there were four different levels of tint and you could order what you wanted.

The radio I wouldn't worry about. It can be changed easily if it's not correct. If it is correct it's a plus. I'd make sure the more important items are correct. Sounds like a great car! Good luck.

hey I had a 1960 chrysler 300 conv when I was 19 it had am fm with a channel changer on floor , and a dealer instaled tonneau cover with zipp out for driver like a english sports car , with powr buckets and consul , no shifter and a lot of other weird options as I remember, car sold new in Toronto ont .

My 66 Charger had power windows. As for the radio, I think an AM/FM was available in 1967, but not certain. I know the 66s and 67s had the same dash, so it could have been an easy swap.

I don't believe there were any "optional" wheels on a 66. Just 14" rims and the spinner 3 piece hubcaps.
There is also no numbers matching in 66. Just date codes.
A real hemi car is worth a bit.

1966 Coronet’s were available with am/fm radios so there would be no reason why they wouldn’t be available in the Charger. Now once you see the documentation you will be able to see what it was originally equipped with. AM/FM radio’s were rare back in the day as most radios in cars back then were am/pm radios.

Ive owned 4 66 Chargers. Only 1 had power windows. All had am radios. If Im not mistaken the illumenesent lighting was part of the radio as well as the console. I could be wrong.

I’ll check my 66 & 67 parts books tomorrow but you might be on to something about the lightning.

There were no special wheels in 66 as stated above, but there were at least two different wheel covers, according to my parts book. The spinner type and a simulated mag type.

My 66 came with both styles of wheel covers. The mag caps were still in the boxes when I bought the car from the original owner. Not sure why. I prefer the spinner caps.

I do know the mag caps fitted on the rims feels weird. Almost a heavy feeling. The spinner caps inset into the rim feel like there not there.

If it’s a real Hemi Charger, now this is just my preference, but I could care less if the radio is correct or not...again, my preference....!
