Who made purple shaft cams for Mopar Performance?

One of the challenges of the Direct Connection engineers was to get DC cams to perform as well as Racer Brown.
They could not.
This was told to me by Larry Henry.
fyi: In the Kit Car brochure, Larry is the guy standing with the Kit Car parts spread all over.
Is that why the banned 440 and 426 Hemi ?
 
General Kinetics in Detroit ground the cams for DC, I worked at General Kinetics at that time and loaded many cam blanks on Machine to be ground. My father was in Management at Chrysler and got the job/account for Mopar and was also a personal friend of the GK owner (Don Tewels) I can tell you all kinds of interesting stories about that place...Also, i do remember testing cams after they were ground and once in a while we would have a cam with a "soft lobe" The cams blanks were NOT casted by Chrysler, but anther place on 8 mile & Grand River...
 
My direct connection Special Parts Catalog from July 1, 1975 doesn't list any designers or manufacturers for the Street Hemi Grind. The picture below is from page 41 from the parts for the 361/383/400 Lo Block and 413/426W/440 Hi Block. See their note about camshafts...who designed them.

The .509 is a mystery then.
 
Well as bad as it sounds, I suspect the lowest bidder. Every major manufacturer of pretty much anything constantly looks for cheaper sources for everything they themselves do not make.

The 509 is P4120237, but I don't know who made them. Herb McCandless probably knows.

That would not surprise me. Although GK was big for the Chev guys in the early/mid '70's, my GK cams worked extremely well in my 426W & 440's. Always seemed to produce a bit more power than the Mopar grinds though. The Mopar engineers. seemed a little too conservative with their cam designs.
 
I’m not sure how it was when it was DC, but I talked with the MP people shortly after the name change and they didn’t make anything. 100% outsourcing, including the engineering. Shell company.
