The actually did and it was targeted at your country, there is one prototype sitting over in Brisbane. Guess in the US they figured that there was no room in the El Camino and Ranchero markets.

My grandfather cut all his 4 door dodges down and made utes , canadian style.

whats in it? auto or manual?

I don't really remember, but I think it was a stick. It was made in Mexico and shipped to AUS. The story is that there were 2 of them, Chryco decided to can the idea and they were ordered destroyed, however one of them went missing or was missed and now its in Brisbane sitting in a guys yard. He is a HUGE mopar guy, has all sorts of crap ranging from top fuel cars, hemi cars, a Daytona clone or 2, etc. I spend several hours talking to him and looking at all of the stuff.

In the late 50's and the 60's, the Mopars were all "Unibodys". All the Ford Rancheros and Chevrolet El Caminos were based on full frame vehicles. My opinion of why they didn't try the car/truck body style, is because the lack of structural support without a full roof would not have worked out well. The convertibles were reinforced, but the truck bed would probably tend to be much more heavily loaded.....{Just my opinion, because I always thought a "ute" based on the square 66/67 Coronets would be really cool!)

Rancheros, based on Fairlanes in the '60's were unibody, as were the smaller Falcon Rancheros. Torino didn't go body-on-frame until the 1972 models.
