Easy way to DESTROY your classic pre 86 Mopar. Acrylic enamal like the car was born with and a good body man can make that shine with color sanding and buffing. Only a lazy body man uses "base clear coat" on a classic. I wouldn't take a base clear coat classic Mopar to a Russion dog fight -or anywhere. GARBAGE

I’ve seen too many cleared paint jobs peel the clear after years of good care. I like the idea of enamel and or single stage that has the clear mixed in it so it can’t peel..

So what's the point of this thread, try and make people using a superior product feel bad for doing it? I've had success with both but I'll take Base coat clear coat any day. There's lots of drawbacks to acrylic enamel, mostly color sanding metal flake paint or doing small touch ups without painting a whole panel. If your going for a correct restoration then by all means go for it, I have no issues with single stage but "destroy".. Give me a break! Sorry, just don't see the point here?

I despised it for years, mostly in the 80's and early 90's where the factories must have been unsuccessfully experimenting with it and you'd see whole hoods and roofs just peel off. Nowadays you likely only see that when someone screws up, wait to long to apply the clear, using the wrong products, etc.

Not much chance of your ever driving mine then, since I bought it a decade ago with the body and paint already done....

Still looks fine by the way. Nothing "destroyed" to report here.
I'm betting I'm not alone on that point, either....

Nothing wrong with base/clear if you know what your doing. I have sprayed both. If spray a single stage metallic color try wet sanding & buffing it once.

True on the sanding and buffing ... I did forget about that.. mine will be base clear , I went to DuPont paint school years ago, a lot has to do with proper material, don’t mix brands on anything, follow directions and make sure temps are accounted for etc and all procedures are correct... it’s tough to beat the shine of base clear miles deep in black.

27 years and counting for this base/clear job. No complaints here.

So I can put you down as solidly undecided about base/clear on a classic Mopar?

what exactly is the point of the thread ? Just trying to start an argument? And a poor one at that ? how do you buff a metallic single stage again and how's that UV protection working for ya?

I’ll take the base / clear any day. In fact I’ll be spraying some later this fall! PPG Deltron 2000 base, not sure which clear yet.

Mine was BC/CC painted before I bought it. I have no complaints and if I was going to paint it, I'd go BC/CC.

Both paint systems have their place in our shop, All the late models and classics get the base clear ppg products,
Stock trailers , car trailers , Septic pumping tanker, ect ect get the single stage system to hold costs down.
Nothing wrong with single stage paint if your trying to hold the cost down.

Ive know painters who try to match the orange peel of old factory finishs, really ?? Not leaving with my name on it.

Eventually someone was having a bad day and needed to vent. I shot the last 2 of my cars in single stage but will be going BC/CC on the next one. Every professional painter I have met has stated without hesitation that BC/CC is far better to use today. Sure single stage is easy but can be unforgiving, if you use good materials and don't mix brands I believe BC/CC is a better system.

The clear coat is peeling off all three of our daily drivers: 1992 Jeep Cherokee, 1996 Dodge Dakota, 2001 Jeep Cherokee.

The OP obviously was trying to stir the pot. Nobody with any sense just makes a rant like this without expecting to annoy or alienate people.
His opinion sucks and is wrong but he has the right to whatever misguided opinion he can think of.
