I would like to put 3 2 1/16 aftermarket gauges where the Radio was. How do you route the lines so you don't have to hack up the firewall getting them to the engine compartment ?

What wires are you putting through the firewall for a radio? I will assume you want to run a dedicated always-on power wire to the battery direct? That would be the only one that makes sense to me and would be a total of 1 wire. For most aftermarket radios (not amps etc.) you will not need a very big wire. Everything else should route within the cabin/interior.

So personally, looking at these pictures, here are your options:

Sneak past the rubber grommet to the right of the power block just like the Yellow wire shown here.
Wire through the power block if you can.
Or sneak past the rubber grommets on this side:

You might be able to sneak past the heater hoses or the area next to them but getting behind the heater box is not easy unless you have oompa-loompa hands.

My best suggestion is follow the yellow wire shown.

Rgaz,he wants to put in Gauges, not a radio. Im guessing a mechanical water temp and oil pressure, meaning he needs room for the bourdon tube for the water, and a line, (op, please dont use the nylon line, disaster waiting to happen)for the oil pressure guage.
I cant help with op's problem, my cars all seem to have too many holes in the firewall already!
If holes in the firewall bother you, i suggest electric gauges. Thats what i put in my 69 runner.

I installed electric oil pressure, vac, and tach gauges, one in the dash where the clock was and others in a modified console I put in. I found holes in the firewall and holes where other lines pass through it to use as posted. One hole didn't have a rubber grommet so got one to put in. I opted for an electric oil pressure gauge wanting to avoid an oil line coming into the cab. Doesn't happen often; but two bud's had their oil lines burst inside the car and a friggin mess, burned leg, and trashed carpeting. The sending unit I got was a two post to retain the idiot light. They're not as accurate but for my street use a few psi variance isn't a deal breaker.

Oh man, maybe I should learn how to read. I misread the question.

Anyway, I would agreed with you. Go with electric gauges. I know they have limited sweep and may not match the 69 decor.

If you really want mechanical, then I recommend looking at picture #2 and Punch a large hole to the left and below the heater hoses. Then add a rubber grommet to pass all those tubes through.

Sorry for the confusion.

When I installed mine (mechanical), I just drilled a hole and added a grommet. It looks just like OEM.
