going to see a 383 engine tomorrow does it exist in red color? I understand they came in turquoise.

The Road Runners where orange.

383 came in both turquoise and a variety of hemi orange, both in the same years, depending on a/c or not. I dont think they ever came in actual chrysler red. I am willing to be proved wrong. Cant say i would be surprised .

Im not going to say no, I have seen old 318 poly engines that were red color, old early 383s ??? who knows.

It is likely the older RB 383 engines from the late 50's (58/59) were red

Quick and dirty:
Chrysler used four different shades of orange.
The first is now known as race hemi orange. A very yellow orange, used on maxwedge 62-64, and 64/65 race hemi. Next is 66/67 street hemi orange, I think (think!) less red than the later hemi orange.
Next is what everyone calls hemi orange, actually later street hemi orange would be more acurate, used on hi perf 383 and 440 as well as street hemis, 69-71.
Then there's air cleaner orange, rumored to match fram air cleaner elements, used on random air cleaner lids, and sometimes aircleaner bodies.
If there were red 383s, they would be prior to 1962.
(Make sure the "red" 383 you're looking at isn't a 318 poly).

I painted a matching number 383 in a 4 speed superbird the wrong orange

great info thanks

The other thing to watch for is if it's a pre-'62 engine you need to change out the crankshaft. The older torque converters and flywheels bolt through the crank flange not to it.

They officially didn't
But order as a "show car" or "race car" and you could get any paint, trim or trim/ badges delete, or most any option you wanted
like air with a 4 speed which this bird had ( I did not special order this one but I could have when I was a zone manager)
This is the one I built with a 440 crank and rods and custom forged quench dome pistons for the stock matching number (ported heads) Custom Crower Cam
designed to idle like a stock 383 Road Runner (actually less seat duration) but with 218@ 50 and I forget but like .525 lift exhaust was longer but less lift to match flow of hand ported heads 2.14 x 1.81 valves, dual springs but not a lot of pressure (I'd use beehives today and smaller stem valves)
We ordered 9 pistons and I still have one hung on a 9th rod we used for mock up purposes I showed it to Krooser when he last visited
.035 quench at all 4 corners and all 8 chambers the same cc's
The stock magnum exhausts were also ported or hydro ported by the owner and exhaust size upgraded but it evidently looked stock
stock carb and air cleaner
you work with what restrictions you are given and do the best you can
I rode in it to Bonneville one time and OMG fast. They would not let him run it without a roll cage and different tires
I do not think he ever took it to the drags, not to tear it up
I hate to think that when I was with Chrysler we could not even give them away One dealer Had 50 birds, Hemi's, Cudas we had to give rebates
what was I thinking I could have had a barn full Oil embargo and Gas Crunch- you had to be there
