Question for my fellow gearheads about paint. So my plan was to prep and paint the engine compartment on my 72, which i've gotten it prepped and primed, my question is i've been doing a little research on the paint and what i want to use, i'm going with Deltron s.s concept, problem is, i used Eastwoods 2 part epoxy primer in gray all before i knew you should stay with the same system of paint through out the entire process, primer, sealers, paint etc etc... Can i or should i shoot Deltron over an eastwood product or start over which i hate to do since i'm ready to paint, just a rookie who didnt research enough, what do you guys think?

I doubt that will be a problem at all especially if it's cured and you'll be scuffing it up. You really get into trouble when your laying down products that will be topcoated while still tacky or uncured. I wouldn't worry one bit about it.

One thing you can do is contact the makers of Deltron and see what they say. They might suggest using a primer/sealer after scuffing.....?

I usually shoot SPI epoxy primer and have used different brands of color coat over the epoxy. I've never run into issues using different brands of paint. I think this is a CYA move by the manufacturers.

It is more of an issue when you start mixing types of product like laquer then urethane......not brands specifically. I've had urethane basecoats "attack" old laquer jobs when you scuff them and shoot over. You are using all new urethane/acrylic products that will work fine together no matter what. I am always more concerned with letting the coats flash so they don't attack the next step IE. basecoat and clearcoat.

Do a practice panel first.

maybe if your using a eastwood product. Just make sure you have a scratch (sanded) base prior to color. But still I would do a practice panel first. Make sure theres no wrinkling. Deltron is pretty aggressive. It may require a sealer for even coverage as well.
