I’ve not seen this before. Going to disassemble and see if I can understand what happened.

Wow, were you trying to start it, or was it running when it failed?

Tried to start it and starter wouldn’t engage. I found the ring gear pushed back off the flywheel. I’m thinking the ring gear may have cracked.

i have had to replace them back in the day need a torch and time.

It really sucks!!
I can imagen the racket it may have made, if it was running when it let loose.

Good luck!!

Time for a new flywheel.

Years ago that happened to me. The ring gear cracked, and then was loose on the flywheel on my 4 speed car. Got it up on ramps, and tack welded it in a few places. Worked fine.

get out the wrenches take it apart.....

Glad you werent driving when that happened.

Yep, got the transmission ready to come out. Quite a chore with the console having to come out first. I’m also due to put in a new clutch while it’s apart.

@toolmanmike why a new flywheel? If new ring gear fits tight but if it might spin on flywheel tack weld it on. Guy where I worked couldn't use his clutch so he turn engine off to stop. Hit the starter to get car going in gear and limped home. Ring would spin on flywheel. He asked what he could? Take it to maintenance and get Stewie to tack on,lasted 'til he junked truck.
Edit: If he can get a ring gear?

Can you get the ring gear back on straight? Why did it come off? They are pressed on in a fixture at the factory I would imagine. Do what you wish I would get a new flywheel.

Why does the console have to come out?? Asking for a friend,,,
To remove the shifter. Prior to dropping the transmission. Even if you take the top of the console off it would be difficult to remove the hurst shifter.

Ring looks cracked from here!
Just get a new ring gear heat it up evenly and wack it in place !
I did this many times on my car equipment! And dump trucks !
It won't go anywhere once it cools off !

My first time doing this 16-17 I sat there awhile telling the old guys the damn thing won't fit ! One set the blue wrench next to me and left it finally clicked ! I figured it out ! Damn high school science finally payed off!

Oven at 350 for 1/2 hour set on flywheel when it will not move easy lightly tap with punch so tight in place cool no stress

I used to work for a package delivery company, I cant tell you the number of ring gears I installed with a heat wrench. The constant starting would chew up the teeth. Never had to replace a flywheel because of the ring gear,,,,I bet he is gonna find the ring gear is split,,,?
