Will a 440 have enough bottom end for a 3500 stall AND a tunnel ram, WITH a 906 heads and a purple big cam? I decided I would use a purple cam and I didn’t know if a 440 could handle all of it and still have enough bottom end, kinda a dumb question but just kinda wandering to be sure.

Yup, need more info but even a stock 440 has decent low end torque. How big of a cam are you talking about? Heads going to be ported? Compression ratio and on and on???

What converter do you actually have? 3500 stall, is not very meaningful. Is it a 10" style and from which manufacturer? The 440 will have plenty of torque for a "3500" 10" converter. The high torque of the 440 magnifies the torque multiplication of the converter. You need a real good quality converter that does "lock up", not just continue to slip.

Should have also said that a stock 440 gets away with a 12" slug converter because it has so much torque. Bigger cams that lower the torque below 2500 RPM want the smaller "higher stall" converters to multiply the torque.

Based on your other thread I would say the old .528 solid purple shaft is one that would keep you safe.

I can’t remember what rear end, I’m going for a .528 cam and a tsi 10 3500 stall and 906 ported heads let me check what’s my axle gear ratio

Think you would need a transmission cooler spliced in after the radiator. The dollars keep adding up.

jegs sell some bigger ones, I don’t know how many rows the radiator had but it seemed pretty decent

At the bottom of the radiator lines from the transmission go in and out to cool transmission fluid. You need a second transmission cooler on the return line to transmission. It's usually mounted in front of radiator. A 3500 stall converter generates extra heat. Look up how to install a transmission cooler on a car like yours.

I would call a converter manufacturer and talk to them directly, like Dynamic or PTC. Your 440 will surely have the bottom end, but if you just buy one off the shelf it will likely be too loose and that's no fun in a streetcar for anything other than racing. The custom guys can build you a 'tighter' converter that still has the higher stall speed, and it'll be much more enjoyable driving around. So many of us have learned that lesson....

Absolutely. Talk to the torque converter manufacturer and be prepared to give him as much info as possible. Engine, trans, any mods done to either one, rear gear, tire size, vehicle weight, engine specs and mods etc... The more specific info that you can give, the better the recommendation that you will get.

Getting to be an interesting 40 build thread where even a 3500 isn't a sure thing as one can manage to "purple stick" leak all the low end grunt out of a 3.75" arm crank !....Ask anyone who's been there how "fun" pulling into "drive" & instant "stall lock" is kinda manageable but certainly a miserable jerky combo that's Really tough on the U joints (& any passengers flopping around) ...well, it seemed "funner" at the time compared to needlessly "blowin" the big bucks on the loose converter.....ahh....the good ole days of ignorant youth.....I'd give anything to get back there ('70) again...hot cars, fast women ..rulen the Shoney's & Blue Star scene with yo popin & spitting A990 ride !!
