Got a new cam broke in yesterday and was trying to do some fine tuning this evening. At idle I can hear what sounds like a screwdriver handle tapping on the valley pan or valve covers. It sounds like its coming from the front of the engine though. I stuck a stethoscope at a few different places and couldn't pinpoint it. It doesn't tap fast enough to be something under the timing cover I dont think. I'll try to post video, you can here it the last 1/3 of the video.

If you're running a mechanical fuel pump check the length of the pushrod. Should be 3.22".

Electric only. I pulled the rod out so it’s not that.

Maybe, it has that hollow tapping sound so I’m not sure.

Were you working with a midget?

Ok, how bad did I mess up?

guess I ran a too long pulley bolt into the timing cover. Can I pull the damper, reset and torque back down or am I getting a new one?

That bolt was hitting the timing cover? If it didn’t rub a hole through it you’ll be fine other than cosmetically.

Sure looks like it’s been riding on something. I’ll know for sure when I get the damper pulled. When I put the damper on it went on good and I torqued it to spec. I did build a jig to hold the damper while I tightened it, maybe it tweaked it because it sure looks like it wobbles.

If it's a used dampner check the rubber real good for any misalignment and deterioration. Check the ring against the hub for trueness.

I just did one for a friend who did the same thing. :cursin: It's time for a new timing cover.

Didn't wobble prior to cam swap. Bottom not opened. Pictures show wear on close to half of back of damper and rub marks on timing cover.
How do I test this damper or do i just buy new? Or am i looked at bohica on the crank nose?

Looks like junk to me. The rubber between inner and outer ring looks like it is coming apart.

I believe the rubber smashed into the raised area on the timing cover and caused the crumbled look. The worst part of the rubber is where the “crusty” part of the outer ring is wore off. The seal lip is also wore down rough from where I had the too long bolt in it.

It's wavy on other side they're not made to be straighten out, if it wobbles it's NG. MO. Middle looks like spring from seal is laying on top of crank snout. You can't pull Harmonic damper by pulling on outer ring it could end up in two pieces.
