Haven’t posted a thread or pics in here before but here goes. Bought my 71 RR back in December of 2016. Had a bone stock 440 in it but came w/ the #’s matching 383, the original A833, build sheet, fender tag, etc. I’d always had automatics before, ( 70 Challenger #’s matching A66, 73 Challenger H code ) and had been wanting something I could row the gears in. I definitely wanted a B body, and since 2nd gen Chargers are outside of my price range I opted for the next best thing, a 71 Road Runner.

Other than swapping out a set of 3.91’s for 3.23’s the car stayed as it was purchased. Decided back in 2018 after the Nats I wanted overdrive, the ability to run deeper gears, and still cruise comfortably at 70, so I bought an 18 spline that came with all the gear vendor goodies. Fortunately/unfortunately it didn’t end there.

Snowball Effect

To date I’ve done the following:

1. Wanted more hp, bought a 440 that should put up around 450 hp

2. Rebuilt the entire front end after stripping and repainting the K member

3. New master cylinder and brake lines.

4. Sanded, primed, and painted the engine bay.

5. Pulled the front old bench seat out and bought two bucket seats at the Carlisle show. Had them reupholstered with Legendary covers.

6. horse traded for a 6 bbl setup and 3.91 SG

I’m missing a lot and have plenty more project pictures, but this post is getting long. Anyway, the painting and rebuilding has been finished since last December and I just put the K member back in over the weekend. When you tally up the money and you’re in the 35k range without an operable vehicle/toy you start to question your sanity, LOL. A few miscellaneous items should be here throughout the week, if all goes as intended the engine will be resting within the car by Sunday. I’ll do my best to keep up with the future work and add to the thread until complete. Still lots to do. This was my first time undertaking a project like this and has been quite the learning experience.

Beautiful beast. I don't remember seeing that side mirror on a Road Runner before (my parents purchased a new '71 Road Runner when I was 16 years-old).

Nice! @Dibbons that's the standard mirror in 71, had it on mine too.

Nice is that aftermarket ac setup I see?

Got the brake calipers back on this evening. Just waiting on new upper control arm bump stops and torsion bar retaining clips to come in, if I’m not forgetting anything that should wrap up the front end work.

Hey rev1773, I too am a recent member - $35K found a '71 road runner 383 #s matching motor/833 trans w/ 3:91 8 3/4 (not sure if axle is original) from a private collector in Portland, ME. He owned it for 13 years, bought it from a dealer in TX and only put 1000 miles on it. He has 19 other Mopars in his awesome collection - mostly 4 speeds including my favorite '70 Hemi road runner. NO DOCUMENTATION HISTORY came with the car, but said it had a rotisserie restoration (which I believe it did because it looks so awesome BUT there are so many things I'm finding were not put togrther correctly... I test drove it and although it ran great made a list of all the issues (I spent ~ 1 hour under the car on jackstands - wish it was on a lift!!! Anyways he was asking $37.5K I offered $33.5K but his bottom dollar was $35K what I paid. He delivered the car in an enclosed trailor and although it has been looking and running great I keep finding and fixing issues that were never done OR done wrong... My biggest hangup at the moment is that the passenger side door never closed or aligned properly BUT the good news is that the driver side door is PERFECT

My advice is that it costs a lot more to do a car than to buy one that's already done...

First off, love the title of the thread, procrastination and I are very good friends. I have a 71 Charger project going on but I am in the middle of working on a 69 ply wagon for a friend, then have to put rear quarters and do an engine swap for another friend and then "maybe" I will get to my 71.

Clean RR you have there, love the two tone buckets. Yep, they definitely cost more to build than to buy as is. That being said, I’m putting this thing together so I know what I have and don’t have any intentions of selling it. The knowledge gained is well worth the extra labor and money spent IMO.

Rev, welcome and that green looks really great!

Do you have any information on the aftermarket A/C setup you have? If money becomes available next year, I have been wanting to possibly set up an A/C in my car but didn't want to modify the firewall and it looks like yours uses the factory non ac spot. How does the inside look if you have any pictures of the controls and routing.

Seems all my projects have been in procrastination hell the last three years....
The easiest project would be replacing the oil pan on the '71 Charger. Likely have over $30K into it already.
The '69 Coronet R/T Convertible, needs the wiring finished, and fixing some break line leaks (stainless lines.) Likely > 50K into it.
The '73 Jensen needs a bunch of work, some electrical, but fixing all the leaks will likely result into rebuilding the Engine and Transmission too, and I have about $25K in that project.
The '69 Coronet R/T Hardtop (basket case) is a long way before I get to it. I have a 2008 SRT8 6.1 Hemi and trans I want to put into it (it dosen't have a drivetrain right now.) I have spent the least money and time on this one, but I don't even know how many thousands I have spent having it in storage for 20 years.

I’ll get you some pics and info this evening. I’ve never bothered to figure out what brand A/C it is. It will freeze you out though, once the cabin is cooled off I have to run it on the first blower speed setting.

LOL, I hear you, it’s very easy to accumulate projects. When I finish the 71 RR I have a 79 Warlock and 53 Willys CJ3A to start on. Looking forward to finishing this RR so I can start on the Willys.

Nice car and nice refreshments to the car. Good luck!

Here’s a couple of pics I dug up before I pulled the engine and a few pics under dash and of the controls. The kit used a Sanden 508 compressor, guess that’s pretty standard for aftermarket. The compressor mounts underneath the alternator, the bracket I have almost looks homemade though. It wasn’t painted and covered in surface rust when I bough the car. I’m doing research now trying to figure out how hard it would be to convert over to a serpentine driven system. If I figure out any more info I’ll pass it along to you.

Thank you, That helps a lot!

Every done car I’ve seen for sale that I was interested in always needed something fixed or changed= more money

Converting to a serpentine driven system is pretty simple, but expensive, and usually does not leave room for a mechanical cooling fan.
