Do you speak with an accent?

On occasion, people tell me that i still do.
Not a heavy New England, "twang" but i grew up in Connecticut, but left there when i was 20, now 67.
But nothing sounding like a 'Maine'iac"

Surely everyone has an accent?....if only sounds like someone does not have an accent if they talk just like you!...so I would have an accent to all of you....and even folks from other parts of the UK have accents...the further North you go here the stronger the accent...to my ears at least!

Why do we not hear/see accents in this venue?:)
Most of us have had classes in speech and how speech is intended to be spoken. Who has been spanked by a speech teacher?

I've never been mistaken for being somewhere other than Texas...I hate speaking in public after hearing myself on a recording...it's more that a draw...although when I was single those women in Colorado and Georgia loved it...
I too wonder how much work announcers put in to annunciation. Kelsey Grammer, Morgan Freeman, James Earl Jones have a way with speaking.

Many, many moons ago I had a relative in California tell me I had a Chicago accent. When I questioned that, she said "You sound like a gangster". :) I still don't hear it.

Mostly, I just babble incomprehensibly and drool for added effect. People stay away and that's a good thing.

To my ears, people in the Pacific NW have absolutely no accent.

Cherish any 'accent' ya got and is what it is. Born in WI, from a family mostly from the Chi-town area, (my dad transferred to Milwaukee few years before I came to be) I usually pick up on anyone from there. My Chi-town area cousins and other relations (sadly more gone now than living) could always pick out that accent. Have several friends from the south and some have heavier accents than others for some reason. I picked up on the "pa" lingo: Palay, palease, etc. Kinda picked up on this listening to Brett Favre when he made his Green Bay retirement conference saying "I can still palay...". Palay he did going to the Jets, then to the Vikings, lol. I KNEW then he wasn't done palaying yet winning a couple bets on it. My youngest moved to FL a few years ago and when watching local news or hearing radio programs, noticed so few have any southern accent. Are these people transplants or going through an accent declination process? Now I won't get into an old family friend from Ireland where I could only pickup on every fourth word...lol.

Of course !!! Although I've been told that my pronunciation is very good almost without an accent, proud of being a Hispanic, Mexican, Spanish speaker and proud to be here taking to you old farts in english:thumbsup::luvplace:

Funny. Years ago working with our UK counterparts we used our Cajun tech as our interpretator. He could understand their lingo and worked both ways to clear up misunderstandings.

Being raised in the four corners of Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas I know I do. If I were to say the previous sentence out loud I would have said "raised up."
Do you speak with an accent?

Brooklyn New York, I’m told I sound like a “Wise Guy.”

Here in Ohio I worked with a fine lady and people were always asking her, "where are you from?". She would answer, "LA,,,,,,,,,,lower Alabama."

I moved from home state of Ga to Mo. at age 31. The first four years there all I heard was " where ya from boy, you sure talk funny!" LOL

It depends who is listening to. Best way to talk American English is with a chewing gum between your teeth I was told once, while talking British English is best with doing some mouth excercise prior talking.
Proud when natives can not tell at once where I am from, others make me of Swedish origin. Best is using slang and swearwords where possible:D
Saying this as a German......:drinks:

Back before the net I sold lots of Mopar parts/cars over the phone. I got to where I could usually guess from what state people were from. Now if someone moved to Fl from Ma. and claimed to be really from Fl, that was cheating!

I sound like a hick, just ask Dennis.:D He said he thought I lived in the country somewhere and seemed surprised when he visited me after the Cruisin the Coast that I live in the City.

I reckon 4 years of college didn't learn me nothin.
