Military service- what do say?

I know you probably do not feel it is your place to question someone claiming to be a vet, but a true vet will appreciate you asking and verifying their service because they know how many D bags are running around getting the accolades and support due to vets when they themselves did nothing to earn them.

Some states will now put "VETERAN" on your drivers license if you show them your DD214 when you go in for renewal.

Yesterday I stopped to get gas and saw 2 Police officers in an SUV . I told them that I appreciated their service and that I support their efforts. Both of them looked around 30. They both were pleasantly surprised and smiled, both told me that they appreciated it.
I do the same with Military Veterans.
What chaps my *** are the ******** that USE it as a means to garner sympathy, win an argument, or beg for donations, especially when they NEVER served!

I never show or wear anything that shows I'm a Vet, as a matter of fact. I hate the term "thank you for your service", it's to damm generic! Why don't you tell me how you really feel about my service instead of some generic crap!! I just say thanks and be on my way! People need to start being more creative in their speech and get away from the SOS statements all the time!! JMHO
Would you rather have it like it was in the late 60's/early 70's where some actually threw feces at returning troops??

I just say thank you. It does make me a little uneasy sometimes. My years of peacetime service in the Navy were a cakewalk compared to many vets. I feel like taking credit for my service "diminishes" the service of those who sacrificed so much more than I did.
I have the same feelings much of the time....

Texas has that too.

That's a totally different bag of worms man.....

The guy I talked about originally was at an outdoor table with about 4 other people. Loud R&R over speakers and beer flowing. He had a big smile and looked like he would have loved to talk awhile, especially when I told him Vietnam for me. Jeez, I hate this COVID thing!!!!!

You're totally missing the point here as always, if you've never worn the uniform, you'll never understand and have no comment here! But I'll let you slide this time!!

I wore the uniform in the early 70's you butt. You know what you can do Mr Know It All.....

take it in the spirit it is meant to be...

leave it at that don't over analyze it

What do you guys say when someone thanks you for your service? I've said "thank you", but now (after thanking a Gulf vet), I like his answer kinda-- he said "my pleasure ". 'Pleasure' , not real sure(?)!
That is what I say. Both wife and I are retired Military and we both loved serving the country, and would do it again in a heart's beat. People in NE Ohio are very supportive of Military service.... When they asked for volunteers earlier this year to support the effort against the "virus", I volunteered. The Army called to confirm my request, but they didn't need any Intel guys - just medical.

Perhaps the statement "Thank you for your service" is generic, because most people know nothing about you, your service, nor what it entailed. Today, fewer than 1% of Americans are serving in all services, and trying to modify a comment to someone in the Coast Guard is a lot different than for someone in the Army or Marines. A lot better than the comments we got from concerned "citizens" when I first got out in 1969 (yes, I am old).

I, as a stay home dad, do the grocery shopping, take the kids to school (before CoVid shut everything down), run errands, takemy daughter to gymnastics and my autistic son watches the trains go through town as the tracks are behind the gym, clean the house and tinker in the garage. When I’m getting groceries, I see Vets from Nam, Korea, WW2 and the Middle East, sometimes I see active duty sailors and when I do, I say “Sir, thank you for your service”. The younger guys/gals say “thanks” but the older guys, will stop and stare for a second (as though they are in shock) then say “you’re welcome, I’ll hold my hand out and we shake hands, even chat for a bit, some have their wives present and we all chat.

I teach my kids to say “thank you for your service” when they are with me and we see someone old guy wearing a hat. I also explain why they should thank them, hopefully some day they will actually understand.

I’ve never been thanked, don’t expect it either. I don’t wear hat(s) that show where I served. I have the same buzz haircut that I’ve had since bt, along with a go-tee. My license plate has the handicapped insignia with DV (Disabled Veteran). Rarely do I use those parking spaces, but I do enjoy that I don’t have to pay registration (California) on my vehicle, nice perk.

If some of the Vets on this forum don’t like to hear the “thanks” it’s cool, but if I see ya wearing hat declaring you served, I’m gonna thank ya, just my way of saying you’re not alone and I’ve got your 6!

If I started this I apologize, I didn't mean to say I dont like hearing it, what I meant is that at times it seems forced and insincere like its something they have to say (kind of like saying sir or ma'am to an officer you don't like). That said, I would never discourage anyone from saying it and respond with a "thank you" regardless of who says it or when.

Concerning the “Officer” statement, if I didn’t like an Officer, I just called them by their rank, example, gold oak leaf (Lt. Colonel) and not Colonel or butter bar, 2nd Lt. not Lieutenant.

When I got out, the first thing I did was get into street clothing. It wasn't anything to do with being ashamed of the military clothing but all to do with being hassled by 'civilians'! Things were sure different when I got home too.....like I was damaged goods or something. Even my friends seemed to be a bit uneasy around me. Eh, one of the first things I did was go get a bike and hit the road and started enjoying myself!

Returning from the sandbox there was an old lady at the Atlanta airport who stood in the bottleneck at arrivals and hugged every soldier she could get her hands on, thanking them for going and welcoming them back. Many went on by rather than engaging with her. After 14 hours on a stuffed airplane full of sweaty soldiers, overnight and tired, hungry/hangry and freaked out and mentally exhausted, they could be forgiven for not being amenable. Right nearby were the protest contingent. HOW NICE.

I say “thank you and I’d still be serving if they let me”, sometimes. Sometimes I just say “it was my pleasure - thanks!” It was mandatory retirement for me, as the USAF was in the middle of a 40K staff reduction at the time and old timers were forced to retire. Some people ask me what my cryptic response means and others just give me a funny look. Sometimes I get into a chat with another vet who thanks me and it is great to talk to them. I wear a USAF ball cap practically everywhere (balding pretty bad on top). I was once stopped in Acme by a vet who works out at McGuire AFB and he gave me his card. He works as the Space-A guy and he said he’d hook us up for free around the world flights. Now that is some great perk! (You retirees should check this out if you’re not familiar with that program.)

As a USAF brat, I went to the clinic in Valley Forge every week to get allergy shots. That same hospital treated many wounded servicemen from Vietnam. They took great pleasure at seeing a young kid in there with them. I thanked everyone I saw. I had much respect for their bravery and sacrifices. Though many were only a few years older than me, they looked like men to me, while I still felt like a little boy inside. I will say that I saw a ton of TA Challengers and AAR Cudas in the parking lots there. These vets loved Mopar’s for sure!

My brother wears a Marine Corps cap, to honor his daughter’s service in the Corps. She’s a helo pilot, now in the squadron that flies Marine 1. When people thank him for “his service”, he gets to brag about his daughter. His wife has been a Navy civi for 40 years now. Their daughter went through the Naval Academy (class of 2012). We went to many football games down there, just to get a chance to see her. We’d cheer for Navy unless they were playing AF. Then we’d be the only couple cheering for both the Navy and AF. That got a lot of comments too.

I'm sorry I even commented here to those that are so naïve to understand one's statement!
