I've been reading a few posts about mini starters. I have a 69 383 with a reman. original starter and its starting to go bad and id like to replace it with a mini starter and from what I've read some years of Dakota's etc the starters will bolt up and work. Just wanted to get some more input on which is the best fit as I've read some terminals will hit etc. so if anyone can give me some insight on what would be the best fit I would appreciate it, thank you.

I have been using mini starters for at least 15 years, always grab them from the wreckers for about $25. Any late V6 or V8 magnum motor will have the starter you need, some have an adapter on the battery connections but they usually come off will very little effort.

The late 80s, early 90s Dakota starters work on mine... however, I realize my 340 is a different application than your 383.

At my NAPA said they don't have the full size starter, no cores. I just asked for a 66 V8 starter. Think 93 Dakota Magnum V8 starter. I removed the extension to main stud they had, removed a plastic cover. Some starters you can't remove that cover. Watch to make sure main power stud doesn't touch the block. Some have had to trin stud some.

I coughed up the coin and bought a Powermaster mini for my 440. Was having starter problems - heat soak issues. Always had fitment difficulties with the headers and full size. The mini I bought was a perfect fit with no issues and is supposedly somewhat immune to heat soak. Plus Powermaster makes a great product. The much touted and inexpensive 440 Source mini I had prior was junk and didn’t last for anything. Have had zero issues with it - but they cost.

To be honest, I didn't know there was more than one, granted i have seen some that have a connection relocation block on the top but you just remove that.

I’d choose one with a meaty snout as it’s possible to break them. I broke 3 before I was smart enough to put my old points distributor back in. I was having issues with an electronic conversion I bought causing kick back.

Another vote for the 90's V6/V8 factory starter, bought rebuilt from your local parts store.
(Make sure you get that lifetime warranty!)
The one on my 440 GTX spins the engine easily and takes quite a bit of abuse, since oftentimes
the car loses prime from sitting a week at a time.
It's been on three different engines now and has lasted a decade easily - and if it ever fails,
the free replacement awaits at the local AwkwardAuto!

If you go with a mini, you might need this for the terminals

What model Powermaster starter did you buy?
