'69 block 426 A990 clone 10.5 C/R stored strip motor rebuild--tune down occasional strip-Limited street to 6500 shift point cam question..Narrowed to (1) Crane 260/264 Short lash flat tappet 130#seat,365# nose.Outer only break-in.Good to go or likely Wipe ?. (2) Crane Solid Roller 254/262 150#seat,480# nose .020" lash...(3) Crane Hyd Roller + Solid Rollers 254/258 150#seat,451# nose maybe .007" Lash ?....Will need distrb gear & cover button..Stock block, no bushed bores...Very limited street--occassional strip. Looking for affordable no hassle least predictable wipe out experienced suggestions...Any help greatly appreciated,......tom.
 
My vote goes to a street friendly solid roller that can live with modest spring loads, and using lifters that have direct feed oiling to the bearings.
 
Planning to run one of 540Rat's high rated 10w-30 oil & conservatively hoping the relatively moderate nose # flat solid w/Trend Edm hole lifter would simply Live....No solid roller experience & thought these Rollers safe streetable nose #'s wouldn't Lash mangle the roller particularly (3) the hydro--Solid roller Low Lash combo... Planning Weekly Lash checks w/Best available Lifter...thx for info,.....tom

I just "sposored" Krooser a Jones FT with edm lifters
I put my money where my mouth is
you do not have a standard build so go custom
best choice if you do not go roller
those are your choices to make
 
Does that mean the Jones FT with Edm Lives good or is no practical good, must run Roller set up to avoid Sudden, even with weekly Lash checks, you won't see it coming flatten lobe powder ? I've heard of sudden roller fails, unlike FT fails, generate Big chunks & can waste entire engine blocks ?? That kinda fail would simply knock me out the play ground !

you are looking at 3 basic choices
widely different costs
get all that info together
pick an rpm range
check against your trans and gears
lots of ways to builda 10.5 motor
cam and rpm determine spring pressure (and valve train weight etc)
spring pressures will determing how much maintence you will have to do
since this a street build you do not want a strip only cam and springs

here's what mike says about hiis rollers but pretty accurate about ft too

Compared to a normal "Flat Flanked" cam, my I.R. profiles

make more power, and are more reliable,

or we can make one to make even more power, and be just as reliable,

or we can make one to make a bunch more power, and be less reliable.

For the street, I'd go with option 1, but it's really up to the customer.

so work that out first
do you have light pistons and vavetrain?
If not be conservative on your rpm range especially runnning through mufflers

Hi wyrmrider,..Per opening post, All engine parts '65 factory SS A990 rotating assembly weight, non-lightened piston, all steel valvetrain weights. Stock bore/stroke 426, 6500 rpm max hp/Red-line, 4800 stall. Very Limited street/occasional strip. No personal recent solid lifter/cam life experience but cam(1) planned.Which cam/lifter life if #1predictable bad..Just looking for experienced cam life suggestions...thx,.....tom.
 
Also 3600 lb, 4.56, hookers thru 3"exh to 30" wrinkle cheaters fixed, usual 500-550 crank hp expected. Cam 1 with best Edm lifters planned but just have no recent cam/lifter Rockwell quality available today....thx,.....tom
 
ask krooser what lifters he ended up with
you already have 5/16 stems so any savings on valve weight is pricy and not cost effective with your red line
you might consider beehive springs and retainers
the have less surge so you can get away with less pressure and lighter always helps
what's your spring installed ht/ spring cup dia
do you have typical flows for those heads?
 
Hadn't considered beehive springs,....1.86" Inst ht..... Typical Aluminum heads , ports look real clean, ...around 320 cfm @ 0.600
