av gas. Yes or no

AV Gas at my local air park is $5.10/gal. Sunoco 100 is $8.99/gal.

If it works for you guys and you’re willing to put up with the hassle of it, knock yourself out but it’s completely unnecessary. I have pump 92 octane ethanol blended gas in the tank of the twin turbo hemi. Runs great. Buddy of mine just went 5.40@133 in the 1/8 with it in his twin turbo small block mustang.

If I had to pay at the airport (vs my wholesale deal) it's at or close to $2/litre CDN.. so $6US/US gallon and Racing fuel in 5 gallon cans up here is stupid money.

.. gotta remember there are many of us running original 50+ year old, or engines rebuilt 40+ years ago without hardened valve seats looking for lead as well as octane.

What ratio would be best when adding av gas?
It kinda depends on how much compression and camshaft you have. Ive got an iron head 10 1/2 to 1 engine ("11 1/2 pistons",really measure 10.5) with a stout solid lifter purple shaft cam. I can tune it to run on 91 pump, but it runs a bunch better with another five points of octane, so i mix mine somewhere around 50/50.
You might just need a couple points improvement, and you might have pump 93 available, so maybe two or three gallons in a tankful. Time to experiment!

I can definitely see the lead aspect being a concern. There are some very good additives available today like VP Fuels that contain octane booster and lead substitutes.

I have easy access to aviation fuel and wAs wondering if there is any benefit/downside to using it. Stock 383 4bbl. My thought was to mix it with 93 octane. Maybe help offset the ethanol content.
There are 4 different grades of Av gas, they are all expensive. Based on a stock 383 I feel you would be wasting your money. The higher the octane the slower and colder the fuel burns. So unless you are running 12:1 or higher compression, you may actually drop your horse power.

All my 10.? 340 needed in the summer time was 1 gallon added to a full load and no more ping. It was supposed to be 10.3 but I'm thinking it was a bit higher than that.

I don't get it.
my 11/1, Eddie-headed, 367, went 93mph in the 660, @3457 pounds @900ft , on a hot July afternoon, burning 87E10..With my 230* cam the engine makes a tic under 180psi cranking cylinder pressure.
87E10; my engine loves that fuel.
Maybe my Tight-Quench makes mor difference than I thought.
This 68 Barracuda was my DD for many years.

IDK guys, my engine is nothing special.

I have about 2 gallons left, and I use it for making up two-stroke mix for my lawnmower. It doesn't make the mower go faster, but makes the exhaust fumes smell a bit sweeter.
My A100 engine doesn't take leaded fuel. Got to use it up somewhere. :)

Have a built 383 10.5 stage 5 heads 509cam 4 speed. Run 5 gals AV gas top off with 93.
Runs great in Fla. 90+ heat. Pulled plugs during Covid 19 looked really good. clean, no damage, no fouling. Try it , you'll like it......................
