Last year I installed a borgeson power steering gear using the factory saginaw pump in my 70 charger. Its seemed to work good until the pump started making noise this year. I replaced the pump with reman one, bled it properly and it still was making noise. I figured I bought a bad pump so I bought another that is brand new. Still making noise. It doesn't make noise when the car is idling. It seems to turn back and fourth ok but any time the car is above 2000 rpm whether its in park or going down the highway it makes a horrible screatching noise. I have tried re bleeding it and even used a pump to pull a vaccum on it to get the air out and nothing helps. Is there possibly something wrong with borgeson steering box that would cause this? Its extremely difficult to remove so that's my last resort. I don't know what else to try and I'm extremely frustrated. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Others will chime in but I recall that the borgeson unit puts out a higher pressure and can affect the pump unless addressed with a mitigation. I can’t recall what it is but you are not the first with this issue. I would inquire with borgeson.

Maybe have someone look at the pump and pulley while you rev it up and saw the wheel back and forth. Maybe it is as simple as belt slippage. The stock Saginaw pump for a V8 pumps put out something like 1100-1300 psi. Is there a target number in any of the Borgeson literature?
Also, what makes access so difficult?

Try a new belt - they look OK but can be worn on the sides.

Easy to tell if the belt is slipping. Rev it up for a minute and let it make the screeching noise. Shut off the engine and touch the pulley. If it is hotter than heck, the belt is slipping.

I don't think the belt is loose. Its new and is pretty tight but i will look into that more. Its hard to remove the steering gear because of the headers and to get it in I had to lift up the engine as far as I could to wiggle it in there.

Its also more of a power steering low on fluid sound not a belt slipping sound

Not yet. I have a sniper efi that is causing me problems so I havent been able to drive the car much. I did try spraying some belt dressing on it and I'm running the belt a little looser. That seems to help a little, not sure why.

I had the same problem. It ended up I had to buy the Borgeson power steering pump, and there's 2 different adapters for the box. I had to go with the larger fitting, and a new pressure hose.

Thanks for that info! I knew I had read some others had that problem. That's good to know there's a fix.
Since you have first hand experience, with that all sorted, does the Borgeson setup feel overly firm to drive at speeds under 30 mph? How close is it to Firm Feel Stage II or III (without fast ratio steering arms)? My main attraction to the Borgeson box is eliminating the stock box dead center spot.

I have a Borgenson box, caveat is that I'm running a GMII pump with a serpentine setup and hydroboost.
Are you absolutley sure your return line isnt kinked or otherwise restricted?

I have been driving my Coronet with a Borgeson (purchased through Bergman Auto Craft with the installation kit) steering box using the stock power steering pump. Overall, I am very pleased. I have never driven one of the Firm Feel boxes, so I can't speak to that, but I find the firmness is similar to my 2008 Saturn Sky sports car and my 2005 Dakota. Much better steering feel than the original box, but isn't heavy enough to be an issue in parking lot manoeuvres either. I have a smaller than stock steering wheel as well. The faster ratio (14:1 vs 16:1) is nice, but I would be interested in trying even faster. All in all, I am very pleased with the kit and the steering box. Cheers!
