Judge Ruling DMV Censors of Vanity Plate Submissions Violates First Amendment

Guess the Blade could get CIA-LSD Now.

In the 1980s there was purportedly a guy in Houston, Texas with 6ULDV8 as a "vanity" plate on his pickup truck.

I tried to get the Mass plate PIGSUK but they denied me! Imagine that!

In PA. Any tag request deemed racist, obscene, or inflaming .
Basically if DMV considers it offensive. Won't be issued

If they win it’s pretty likely the state will just shitcan vanity plates altogether. That’s not against the first amendment. Bad case.

Saw this on the ride home earlier this year. Had to take a picture.

It's pretty arbitrary what passed thru.
A few months back I saw one FMEGSUS.

We’re only allowed six letters on ours. I get a free ham radio vanity plate, that’s it on the left.
I’ve had many people try to decipher some hidden meaning or message in it. It breaks down like this:
VE = Canada
8 = my province or territory, in this case 8 is Northwest Territories. 7 is BC, 6 Is Alberta etc.
NSD is my personal identifier. I picked it to honour my ham radio hero, Wayne Green.
We have the most boring, unimaginative vanity plates up here. Virtually all of them are simply the persons first name. I love California, we saw lots of cool plates there.

We're allowed 8 letters/numbers/spaces now in Ontario (for $325!).. use to be only six digits. I had to fight for 8 months to get my wife's '64 Vette plate.. and keep trying to find another '64 to use it on, Mopar this time!

There is NO WAY IN HELL Californication would give up the revenue stream it gets from vanity plates. Back in 2012 we had over 1.3 million vanity plates. The money gained goes well above administrative costs and is used to support many things.

I saw this today and it gave me some great ideas about how to work around their censorship...

They can mess them up too. Just went through DMV Hell telling me TRACPAC1 is expired. That’s 8 characters that aren’t allowed!

Did "6T NINER"
through the NYS DMV website and was pretty surprised when it was accepted (along with my payment of course). Think it was about $70. (?)
Appx two weeks later I was emailed that the transaction was canceled and my card credited with no explanation.
I inquired and was told someone "upstairs" has final say over all web applications. Sounded like a polite young guy, told me he wasnt allowed to give the reason for the rejection. I knew why but played dumb out of curiosity. "It's a 69 Charger" I said!
Then I feigned enlightenment after he tipped his hand about double entendre. "Too bad" he said, "one of the cooler car/plate combos" he'd come across ..... I thought so too.

"Big Brother" snuck up on us long ago and we did not even notice.
Yes, I read the book and it has regrettably become a reality.
