Im in the process of ordering valve springs, locks, retainers etc for my 452 heads. The valve lock kit that comp cams recommends says it comes with half 2 groove and half 4 groove locks. Why does it come with both and which ones do i need? My heads are at the machine shop now and they are closed for the weekend so i cant ask them. I would really like to order the parts asap so any answers would be appreciated.

I "think" it's for factory valves....can't remember which, but I think the intakes are 2-groove & the exhaust are 4-groove??? You might want to check that.

Anybody else know for sure the number of grooves in stock big block valves?

Yes, intake are 2 groove OEM, and exhaust are 4 groove OEM. You will need 16 of each for an OEM setup.

If you are going to pound on it get new valves with 10 degree locks and retainers and springs to match you cam. get the bigger valves and have your machine shop cut the bowls to match. By the time you are done rehabbing those heads you could have gotten some aluminum ones for a bit more $. My 2 cents.
