70 Road Runner convertible project

I just checked the production numbers for the car, and only 824 Road Runner convertible cars were built in 1970. Only 34 of them were 440 Six barrel cars,and only 3 were Hemi powered. This car is the most common combination being a 383 powered automatic transmission equipped car, originally, but since it was already converted to a 4 speed car by a previous owner, I plan on keeping it that way.
 
I got the molding holes welded up on the fenders. They were obviously Satellite fenders at one time. I am going to try to get them sanded down and etch primed, blend the molding holes and primer them tomorrow if possible.

I got the right fender roughed out, I grinded down the welds for the molding holes, and blended them, and got the fender etch primed and the scuffed it down and primed it. I also scuffed down the trunk lid,and lower grille frame that were already etch primed, and got them in primer too.

Well after careful consideration, I have decided that the best way to fix the right front framerail on the car is to replace the whole thing. About 18 inches of the rail needs to be replaced in the area where the front bumper bracket bolts up, and I got a good section of a frame rail to fix it, but I noticed a kink in the inner front fender above the shock tower as well. The tortion bar cross member needs to be replaced as well and I have a new AMD cross member in the box,so I may just as well go ahead and replace the whole right front framerail, shock tower and inner front fender well too. So I went behind my garage and dug out a really nice right framerail with the shock tower and inner fender that is straight and rust free. I also have a new AMD full floor pan and the two rear foot well panels that I had bought for another car, that I sold, but the I bought it back the same day that I bought this Road Runner convertible. So when the time comes to get to the other car, I will have to order another floor pan. The first two pictures show the framerail, the third picture is the AMD cross member, another last picture is the new floor pan behind two Charger roof skins wrapped in bubble wrap. I think that this is the best approach to insure that the car is straight and solid, especially because it is a convertible. The car is on a body jig dolly so I don't expect it to move much,but I am still going to have to brace the car inside to make sure that it doesn't move,and fit all the body parts and check the gaps before final welding everything.

I just went and got some more parts that came with the car. I got the convertible top frame ,a nice 4 speed bell housing, the clutch and brake pedal assembly, and a pair of 70 HP exhaust manifolds. It was a good day!

I got the right front framerail and inner fender trimmed down to a manageable size with the plasma cutter. About an hour or so of drilling spot welds and cleaning up with the grinder and it will be ready to go in the car. I also got the lower door jamb piece to repair the rust in that area.

I had thought that the framerail had a broken k frame bolt in it,but it turned out to be dirt in the bolt hole. I was dreading having to cut open a perfect frame rail to replace the nut for the k frame bolt! Great news!
 
I got back to work on the car and I ground down the welds on the drivers side front fender for the molding holes. I blended the molding holes, and banged out the damage on the forward edge of the fender around the headlight area. Then I sanded the whole fender down, inside and out, then I etch primed the fender inside and out. Then I put a coat of high build primer on the fender inside and out.

The fender only has one spot of actual rust on it,about the size of a half dollar. These pics are in high build primer. I forgot to get a picture of the etch primer stage.

I spent a couple hours assessing the biggest part of the restoration of this car. The frame rail,shock tower,inner front fender,and torsion bar crossmember. I like to get a game plan together,not just start cutting into it,this is especially critical in a convertible!
 
I was hoping to get more work done on the car, but the boss had other plans for me this past weekend! She wanted the deck sanded so that is what I did,after I removed the air conditioners and put them in the basement! She cracked the whip on my hiney! Oh well happy wife, happy life, so they tell me! I hope to get back to work on the car tonight after work!

With 20 project cars on my plate it might come to that at some point Steve!
 
I call dibs on this one .....might have just a few extra 70 roadrunner parts laying around here to help:thumbsup:
 
If the project gets to be too much to do for me,I might consider trading the car for a decent running driving car, something like a Charger, Road Runner, Super Bee or Coronet R/T. Of equal value. It's a pretty rare car,only 824 of them built.
