I bought the Edelbrock 800 AVS-2 for my 68 440 RT. What I thought was really strange was when I took it out of the box the F/A mixture screws were backed out as far as they would go and the accelerator pump was on the top hole. I have purchased Edelbrocks before and never seen a carb set up like this right out of the box. Everyone I have bought the F/A screws are within a turn of being closed and the accelerator pump is set in the middle hole. Anyway I put the carb on set the F/A screws set idle which was way off and go for a ride. Accelerates good jump on it and she takes right off. 65 mph let off the gas then step back on it and she hesitates so bad it was like a total dead spot but no backfire, get back home set the pump in the middle hole go for a ride same thing. I tried different metering rod spring and no matter what I do nothing changes the the hesitation. So I'm just wondering if anyone else has run into the same issue and what you did to correct the hesitation.

Have you tried adjusting the spring tension for the secondary air valve door?

Quality control rears it's ugly head!

The hesitation only happens when I'm at cruising speed like 65 or 70 then let of the gas then get back on it she hesitates. The secondary air valve door works fine when I jump on it hard.

Have you tried more than one set of stiffer metering rod springs?

I hear you there. I bought a Edelbrock 650 AVS-2 for a 340 Dart I had and when I took it out of the box the F/A screws were backed out only a full turn and the accelerator pump linkage was in the middle hole. This AVS-2 800 really threw me when I saw the F/A screws backed out all the way and the accelerator pump linkage in the top hole and now the issues with the hesitation. Just wondering if someone else purchased this carb had the same issues I'm having and they returned it and they just put it back on the shelf to sell again. Although a buddy of mine bought the same carb for his 440 Challenger and he's having the same problem with hesitation. Going to have a chat with a Edelbrock tech tomorrow morning for sure.

When I bought mine , I think last year

I pulled the top off before it even saw a drop of fuel

Glad I did , one float if I remember was way out of adjustment , float level and drop , probably would have never ran

The other float was fine

And those metal float baffles , one wasn’t even inserted on the one side inside the groove

Other then that I LOVE IT ! LOL

I have my mixture screws out 1.5 turns on both
7# pink springs

They recommend 7/16" float level and around 1" float drop
I have mine at 5/16" float level and 1.25" float drop
Factory needle and seats

Yes top hole on pump

I have not touched the air door

And leaned out the cruise mode with just metering rods

Idle / Off idle and acceleration is smooth as silk honestly
Very impressed on my 383/432

To add - I run no choke plate , no choke hardware

This thing will start when bone cold , and idle all day long at 700 RPMs

What metering rods did you change to, I'm going to pull it apart and check the float level and drop. 1 1/2 turns out on the F/A screws seems like a lot. As I was turning mine out the RPM stopped going up at only about a full turn out then I turned it in about a 1/4 turn. idles fine and not really overly rich at idle.

With my vacuum gauge bouncing around adjusting those screws
Best I got was around 13" of vacuum at 700 RPMs

E - Street Heads 75cc
Comp XE275 HL Cam and Lifters

1912-800 AVS2
At one point I even dropped down to a .101 Primary Jet when I was playing

Anyways .104 Primary Jet is stock
65 X 52 Metering Rod is stock

Running a 68 X 52 Metering Rod with that .104 Primary

I couldn’t bee happier with the way it runs once I got my ignition system above 5,000 RPMs figured out

One more - No more then 6 PSI fuel pressure at inlet

I bought a edelbrock 650 avs2 for my 470 stroker. Engine builder recommended a 650 carb. I'm having the same problem, Seems like it falls flat in 4th gear.

When does it fall flat ? When you cruise at say 65 let off the gas then back on it she will stumble a bit ?

I ended up sending the 800 AVS-2 back to Summit for a replacement. After working with Edelbrock tech's for over a week they determined it could be a defective carb as no matter what we tried we couldn't get rid of the hesitation. I asked the tech about the F/A screws being backed all the way out and he said that's not normal so I'm wondering if the carb missed final testing before being shipped to Summit. Fast forward, I get my replacement carb from Summit ( hassle free return ) take it out of the box check it all over and the F/A screws are only backed out a turn and a half so I know I'm in better shape. First thing I did though was to pull the top of the carb off and check the floats, one was perfect the other was off quite a bit so I reset the float and put it back together and put the carb on and the only thing I had to do was set the F/A screws and they were only off a 1/4 turn, everything else was set perfect idle and fast idle for the choke. Took it for a ride and the response was so much better than the first 800. Got up to 65 let off the gas back on hard and there was a slight stumble nothing like the hard hesitation I had with the first one. Took it back home and because I have 14" of vacuum at idle I changed the orange stock springs to the pink ones, took it for a ride and she was better but not perfect. I then swapped out the stock 65/52 rods for a set of 68/47's and she is perfect, a little leaner on the primary's and richer on the secondary's. Smooth as glass I can go 65 let off the gas and back on hard and there is no stumble or hesitation at all, she runs perfect.

Mine falls flat when I reach 50 and falls even flatter if I let off the gas and get back on it

Thanks for the tip. I think I will take mine apart before installing it.
