I have a 493 stroker engine, built with 440 stroker components, 10:1 ross flat top pistons, comp XH high energy camp, When engine is cold, very noisy, almost like a lifter is not seating properly. Noise disappears substantially when engine is at operating temp & has been driven some. Wondering if this is because of cast iron sleeves and aluminum pistons, or a cam problem. I've had the engine builder look at the cam. He didn't think there was anything wrong with it, but not sure. Any one else have this experience?

Did the engine builder do the “pistons in backwards” trick? Grabs a few extra HP but will be loud like that when cold.

Hmmm,
I do know that HiPo built engines can be "noisy"
That is a sacrifice we take under consideration when designing our build...
Just saying...is this the case?

I think questions like this are obvious, what weight of oil are you running? Rockers adjusted to spec? Oil pressure @ startup? Age of the build..etc.

Presuming a 4.150 crank and 6.760 rod you will have a piston with a CH of around 1.87 or thereabouts, that's a pretty stable piston in the bore but Ross uses 2618 alloy and they need .005 - .006" clearance. That will flop around a bit in the bore until it is hot - probably still make noise when it is hot, just the price you pay for a performance build. The comp xe/hl cams are noisy, even the xe/xs cams kick up noise. If it quiets down when hot I would be putting it down to the piston clearance, pretty normal stuff. Maybe find some clips of a similar engine and compare it with yours, have you taken it to your engine guy and let him here it?

Wow. Did he pull the motor out to pull the cam, or did he pull the cam out when the engine was still in the car?

I dont think this applies to his pistons.

68Moparmaniac hit it right on the head... what type of oil are you running? Maybe to thick. Also what cam manufacturer? Assuming its a hydraulic? I had a problem once with comp cams. All I run now is Bullitt cams

Thicker oil is generally quieter

Loud start up noise mostly goes away when engine hot issue...Using $5.00 Harbor Freight Mechanics Stethoscope, builder/owner should be able to source noise type (low mass tick, click, tap,=valve train) Or (high mass, metallic knock= piston-block slap, rotating assembly) ...on an old experienced guess, Probably undesirable cold, short skirt stroker, high clearance forged alloy piston and/or zero to .090" Left (non-stock) piston pin offset, Piston to bore Slap noise...Probably slightly scuffin when cold, live & learn engine mod thing..If Rev'd pin offset issue, swap piston bore side location cheapest fix or turn up radio volume knob & forget it !!

Mine does that sometimes. The headers are almost as old as the car and sometimes they leak and sound like like valvetrain noise until it warms up. Depends on what gaskets I am using, how recently I have fussed with it, etc.

I am thinking its the comp cam and noisy lifters.
I used a xe cam and lifters and they have some noise.
Enough I checked the lifters after sitting. & pulled the intake and ckd. The lobes .
All was fine, it's just a noisy set up.
Yep have some pre load on hyd, flat tappets.

BINGO ! (in my opinion only)

And if the Shop didn't have a Torque Plate when honing could even be seeing closer to .007" clrc in some holes with the Head Bolted down
