727 Endplay Measurement

What is the proper way to take the endplay measurement? I keep seeing conflicting things about letting the case support itself and pulling up on the output shaft and then some say to lay it on its side and pull on the output shaft.

I will say that I cannot seem to get any reading out of when it is vertical case supported. When it is on its side it is .15". That seems tight from what I have read but I am not sure I am even taking the reading correctly if it should be vertical.

Thoughts?
 
It is supposed to be done before disassembly. I usually put the pump in with out the O-ring and with the gasket and two bolts snugged up. Then measure the input shaft play. Some times a large pair of pliers is needed to get the in and out motion needed for the measurement. You can stick a magnetic dial indicator on the pump to hold your indicator. There is such a large variance in the spec I can tell when the end play is OK. Might have something to do with rebuilding these since 1970.

Vertical or horizontal either works... Vertical is nice cause gravity makes sure all the movement of the planetaries is forced to the rear... But now in order to measure the end play you have to overcome gravity acting on the clutch packs... As mentioned above pliers help....

In the horizontal position you don't have to fight gravity but now getting a reading cane effected by the planetaries not being fully rearward...

Like Mike mentioned you develop a feel for it...
 
So the .15 should be fine take horizontally? I didn't measure on disassembly. I am getting the last of everything back assembled, installed pump with o-ring and torqued all bolts to spec then took the measurement and that is what I'm getting.
 
If it's actually .15 then something is wrong, the range is around .040-.080, you have twice that...

Is the tailshaft housing in place? Is the snap ring in the groove of the rear bearing?

Are all the thrust washers in place?
 
Sorry, .015 is what it is. Yes, tailshaft with snap ring is in place as well as all washers.
 
.015 is to tight I like to see at least mid .03 range... A thinner thrust washer is the easy fix..
 
The ones I've done have been vertical. No issues at all and I set it close to minimum.

In that picture is it actually sitting on the tail shaft or should the case be supporting it?
 
Any play in the output shaft alone is due to the tolerance in the rear bearing snap ring grooves. Anybody ever measure that?
 
Ok, definitely needed to use pliers when vertical. Sitting on the tailshaft and using pliers I am getting .042".

That sounds good. When I did mine I used a cheap set of HF vise grips (soft metal lol) to lift the input shaft.

I normally do mine horizontal since that's how I assemble them. I work it back & forth a few times, then measure a few times. .042 is nearly minimum, I'd be real happy with that.

I also do my end play check with no pump O ring a few bolts and the paper gasket.

To be honest I don't pay a ton of attention to end play. I put it on the tail shaft. Wrap my hand around the reaction shaft support and the input shaft. Then I lift the case and feel the two separate. As long as its not bound up or over .100" its good.
