this is on my 727 output shaft. part # on it is 2400301 & looked it up says it's output shaft seal. it's on my 65. it's not on my 64 or 77 727's. read something about being used on 65-66 slip yoke that had a grease fitting to lube splines but my doesn't have that. i don't get it. can someone please tell me about this. thank you.

In all my years doing this stuff I never saw one of those....

I just finished rebuilding my 65 727 last week, and that was also on the output shaft.

Only used in '65-'66. Slip yokes that used this seal had to have a small breather hole in the soft plug that closes off the rear of the yoke splines and had to have a smooth bore in front of the splines. Spline grease was applied with the yoke removed, no zerk.

I just rebuilt my 67 A-body 833 and it has one. It isn't shown in my 70-71 FPM. I'll look in my earlier manuals.
65 was the first year for the slip yoke on the 727. 66 for the 833. They must have decided that it wasn't needed later on.

The change involved leaving one spline tooth out, so oil could lube the spline, and eliminating the yoke vent hole.

so it sounds like i need to use it & drop the drive shaft once in awhile to lube the splines

I never looked but it should be in the FSM under chassis lubrication. I worked in a Dodge dealership in the 70s next to a tech who sold a lot of u-joint repacking, all labor, and got a lot of tips from his regulars. Never figured that out. He also rebuilt 727s in a pan under the car (on hoist) on the floor. I don't remember him ever washing the parts.
