Hey Everyone I'm looking to do a fairly long road trip in the spring and think it will be easier to do towing a very small trailer with my 70 Road Runner. I plan on hauling the smallest U-Haul type closed trailer with some tools and some other gear, not towing a boat or anything crazy. I figured if those Fastest Street Car guys can do it, so can I right?

Having said that does anyone have a new/modern trailer hitch that they've installed on their B Body that they like? I've seen vintage ones for sale on here but was looking for something new. Any actual recommendations where I should look or what I should purchase? The car is completely stock in that area near the gas tank and rear bumper, so I'm hoping I won't need to do any mods to make a hitch work.

Thanks All!

Mounting an aftermarket (or welded up) hitch on a unibody B body is a challenge.

Finding one pre-made is also a challenge.

I drove a 67 Coronet from OH to FL pulling a small u-haul trailer with a clamp on hitch.

Your bumper design is similar and it should work.

I put thick fabric under the clamps to keep from scratching the chrome and it worked well.

Finding a generic clamp on hitch should be much easier.

I have subframe connectors installed on my car, so that should be helpful. It's a fairly stiff car. But I'm guessing you're talking about the overall design and it being difficult to install one in general.

A clamp on hitch? Would love to see a pic of one.

Check the owners manual for a hitch plan. My '69 Barracuda OM has it. It might help in your search for something close.

Wow, guess I've got the last one in the world.

Mine's similar to this, but square tube and can also be used as a flat tow bar, clamping on to the towed vehicle's front bumper.

...but if you're a good welder, the is usually a design with measurements in the owner's manual as stated above.

I've always been leery of how to attach them to the relatively thin C channel "frame" on our cars.

...and of course the permanent ball mount/shin smasher. I'd love to update the design to include a Reese style receiver.

Found it.

Apparently Mine was actually made (or at one time owned) by U-Haul.

That's on FCBO BTW,

I don't see the "A" frame for the flat tow use, though.

OK, one more thing.

Not sure about 1970, but my '67 Wagon has the same frame spacing as a Dakota/D series/f-150, and a hitch made for that popular size will work with a couple minor mods.

Thanks for all the info YY1. Good stuff. I'll look into it all. The "Factory" trailer hitch I'm seeing pics of on here and online appear to be fairly easy to duplicate. I'm a decent welder, but have a friend that's really good so that might be an option. Given the price people are asking for original hitches it might be cheaper and better to make one or at least modify one to work.

I made this hitch years ago. it was fabricated to bolt through the rear bumper, utilizing some of the existing bumper mounts. All hidden behind the license plate. Fuel filler was still functional as well. Unfortunately I do not have the car anymore, nor any dimensional information. Boat and trailer weighed about 3800#. That is a 4 speed car as well. The car is still around somewhere in Southern Ontario, but the hitch is not present in a recent photo.

That's cool. Nice boat too.
