Will a 72 b body k memeber work on my 65 coronet. Mine is trash need another one. Thanks

From what I recall, it fits but it puts the engine either forward or back by 2 inches. That could be a problem.

66 to 72 are the same. They won't work on a 65. As Kern Dog said it puts the engine in the wrong place. You'll need a 63- 65.

Where are you located? I’ve got one from a 63 that I’d sell cheap but you’d have to come and get it.

it will work I have a65 coronet with a 66 and up k-frame, it moves the motor back about a 1 1/2 in. h ave to use the 66 an up idler arm , have to modify the trans cross member, but it does give you more room by the radiator to fit a clutch fan. headers still fit.

Hey I'm from Indiana as well. I'll pm you

I used a 70 unit for mine. It does move it back 1 1/2" or so. Uses the 67? on idler arm which mounts in a double shear instead of the bayonet bolt. You need to use the steering center link that corresponds with whatever year of K you use unless its 66-9 I believe. 70 on the sway bar goes through the K which also puts your sway link mounts in a different spot on the arms. One kicker is the 71 on K has a different steering box mount angle which is the same as the 71 on E body. Plus 71 on B & E use the same K.

With it moving engine back wouldnt that cause trans not to bolt up right to cross member

Yup. Had to deal with that too. Especially on mine since I'm adding a Gear Vendors unit. You will also have to massage the pinch weld flange above the bell in the tunnel area. You will end up with about a finger of clearance around the bell which still allows for some airflow around it. Also put a shot in of firewall to V.C. clearance for you. The area around the G.V. unit needed some work due to the mass of it. If you run a standard 727 it should not be an issue other than playing with the mount.

It can be used but it moves the engine back. There are benefits to moving the engine back but also some pitfalls that you have to engineer around. I wouldn't move the engine back unless you know what you're doing. Probably best for you to find an original K frame. I'm sure they are out there. I have a spare that I keep on the shelf even though I most likely will never use it. Just haven't gotten around to selling it yet. Here is a comparison between early and mid B body.

Found one ..so is there will a 440 mount right up it's a v8 k member im unfamiliar with early stuff

So if you set it back 1.5” or so, you’d end up with a new or modified drive shaft too? That’s likely more than a k member I’d think? Never mind transmission clearance and any future work.

Yes a 440 will mount to an early B body V8 K frame as long as you have the correct brackets.

If installing a small block how is clearance for the distributor?
Just curious.

No clue. If the engine/trans was in the car I could give you a pic or two with some measurements. From there you could maybe get an idea. You would need to see what the difference is between the two engines as far as distance from bell flange to back of head, see how far the distributor hangs back from the block in relation to the bell flange, height of the distance etc. Probably the only way you could nail it down for sure is just do a mockup with engine and trans. Another possible issue is the hvac plumbing. On my car, as it is an ac car, the plumbing is right where your distributor would want to be. On mine, I re-routed it to between the fender and the fender well. Thought I had a shot of it where I put it but nada. Its below and to the inside of the brace then comes through up front.

I've heard that the steering box mounting angle changed after '70, the '72 K-member fits but the steering shaft won't line up with the box.

71-3 uses the same K as the E-body. And yes the box angle changes which makes it a necessity to use the steering center link from whatever the K is from. Not sure if it makes it an issue for hooking the column to the box. Possibly can be adjusted out where the column goes through the firewall? That was one of the reasons I used the 70 unit.
