Hey guys, in the ongoing adventure of problems with my ‘69 Satellite, I’ve got a new one. The accelerator pedal seems to stick. I’ve replaced the return spring and sprayed some grease behind the carpet on the linkage, but it hasn’t seemed to affect it. On top of that, it’s almost like there’s a dead spot. I can slowly accelerate from 0 throttle fine, but it kind of spits in sputters in one spot and if I don’t keep going kind of quick it stalls. That’s not my main concern right now though. Any ideas why it could be sticking?

Test the cable.
Remove both the carb end and pedal linkage end.
Does it move freely?

If there is a sharp bend in the cable, the inner cable can wear a groove in the housing, and tend to bind up.

You should have a double spring...

Is it actually sticking or is your carb just messed up and needs adjustments or a rebuild? Spits and sputters in one spot has nothing to do with the throttle cable. If it was stuck it would just run smooth in that "stuck" spot!

I'd have to look at the cable to see if it has any bends. It doesn't stick in just one spot, it sticks wherever it wants. Full throttle, none, whatever. Sometimes it will come back, but never to no throttle at all. It runs smooth before and after that half second spot and I bet it's only noticeable because the throttle can stay stuck there.

Try disconnecting the cable from the carburetor so you can see how the carb feels when you operate it by hand. (It kinda sounds like what happens if the butterflies get loose on the throttle shaft.) You can also then see how the cable slides in the housing and hopefully narrow down the problem.

Just be glad you don't have a big high horsepower engine..... Wait, did I really just say that????

Sounds like two separate problems.

Alright, I'll disconnect it and see what happens. The carb has been gone through twice now, so I doubt that's the problem, but I am having trouble with the vacuum advance, so who knows what's up with the carb.

Once put a thin carb gasket and throttle plates were catching on the manifold holes.

I know it sounds dumb, but check were the cable clamp is catching the cable at the bell crank / throttle bracket.
Ive seen them clamped on the plastic instead of the steel housing.

So I had enough light after work today to mess with my engine. The cable seems fine, everything is clamped where it should be and the cable moves freely when disconnected. I only have a single spring on my throttle return so maybe that’s the problem? Or maybe I should just replace the cable to be safe.

With the cable disconnected, did you try to move the throttle blades? They should move freely also.

So I think I made a discovery... it might be the gas pedal itself. You see, I pulled it back and just used the little arm and it returned fine, using the pedal it sticks.
