I got some 3 inch or maybe 3 1/2 inch pipes, previous owner put them in and they are new. The car is obnoxiously loud, what is the best way to temper down this furious beats?

A. Take the system off and sell it. B. Replace with a 2-2 1/2" system with a better muffler and reinstall the resonators that are missing and put proper exhaust tips back on. Those tips act like a megaphone/horn. C. Replace the mufflers , put the resonators back on and put the proper type of tips back on. D. Just replace the mufflers. Depends on your budget and how you want it to sound.
Also replace the rear valance with the one designed for the exhaust tips.

I have 3 inch exhaust on my 69 Charger with a comp cams 285 camshaft, headers and a 512 and the exhaust isn't objectionally loud, I run 3 inch dynomax super turbos. Like what what said before is to install some resonators like the Hemi cars had.

If that X section is your only muffler then you need to add something to tone it down. I think I see mufflers past the X section? If so then just get some quieter mufflers, take the boards ideas about mufflers and go talking to a muffler shops about options. I bet that exhaust has 0 restrictions for flow being 3"! Good Luck

I cant tell what mufflers you have (and i doubt that the tubing size is responsible for it being too loud), but the obvious solution is quieter mufflers. Resonators are designed to help with a resonant frequency (drone), and will help with sound volume, but not as much as a quiet muffler. There are some moderate sound volume mufflers that dont hurt power output much. Research which of the three types of muffler sound you like, and buy a quieter version.
I have two 3 1/2" systems, and neither is objectionably loud. The secret is BIG LONG mufflers.

Think he doesn't have mufflers or they're 4" round type.

I added Thrush glasspacks as resonators. Just section out the length you need on either side of the gas tank before the tips (Hemi style).
I believe it cost me $100.

Those mufflers look like flowmasters probably two chambers ya loud. Is that car supercharged???why such a big system ?
Biggest I would go is 3" if motor is stroked 500" or more . X pipe no H pipe , Dynomax turbo mufflers pipes to the bumper

The resonators you show will help. Will they be enough ?? You will have to put them on and see if it is enough for You. Don't know since you didn't

post any sound.

I myself like to hear my exhaust. If I ever wanted to get quieter exhaust, than thats when I know I'm getting too old.

Yea, they are Flowmasters. No, not super charged, just a very robust and angry 440. I didn't put the system in, previous owner was trying to make a really fast car and I guess someone told him to do this.

Loud when under the hammer is cool (or if its a race or drag car)....it soon gets very old when it's a road car especially on a long trip when the drone seems to get right inside your head. Also it's every excuse the police need to pull you over and go through the car! I've had a couple of loud cars......at the time relationships with the neighbours were slightly strained by the car volume too!

It looks like you have two chamber flowmasters. Dont know if they are delta flow, the df are a little quieter. If you like the sound, just want a little less of it, find a three chamber version (i use a giant 3.5 in-out fm 50series big block muffler that has a case twice as big as yours). The other choices are triple pass (all are quieter than short fm's) or straight thru (ultra flows, glasspacks). Straight thru cost the least power, create the most noise.
Like i said, find the sound YOU like, and get a quieter version.
