70 Coronet - Rebuild

Back to the electrical gremlin. I ruled out the new dash harness possibly being wired wrong. I confirmed each wire coming out of the bulkhead connectors to both the headlight and dimmer switches as well as the steering column connectors to the manual. I found no issues there.

I also disconnected the two steering column plugs and then turned on headlight switch and still have the issue with the turn signal lights coming on in the instrument cluster. That should rule out the original turn signal switch I reused as being bad, right??

Somehow those lights are getting power when they shouldn’t be. Now what????

The only issue I have now is when I turn on parking or headlights, the turn signal lights on the dash come on.

Double check the grounds - I would disconnect the turn signal switch while the lights are on and see if the dash indicators go out. If they do then there is something backfeeding through the turn signal switch. If the lights stay on then there is power being back-fed through the lights themselves (which points to a grounding issue)

Electrical is NOT fun

Double check the grounds

That’s what it was. I found it by unplugging the front valance marker lights and the lights on the instrument panel went out. I took out marker light housings and touched up points that are intended to pinch through paint into valance and that solved the problem.

just read your whole thread, absolutely amazing, nice work !!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Rich.

Now onto figuring out why radio isn’t working. I bought a rebuilt conversion radio from another member here and installed. Followed the instructions to a tee, but I’m not getting anything coming out of speakers front or back. Radio turns on and appears to function as intended, but nothing from speakers.

Had the same issue when we restored a '70 Charger. All the lamp housings needed a good clean ground. Car looks great, keep up the good work!

I didn’t realize it’s been so long since I’ve posted progress on my car. I’ve been busy with other projects around house and building new kitchen cabinets for a friend, but I have been able to get a few things resolved on the car.

I ended up having to send my radio out for repair. The board ended up being bad and needed replacement. I got that back and installed in dash. I confirmed it works so I can button up a few things on the dash and permanently bolt it in place.

My brother finished my engine and broke it in on his dyno. Brought it home and we’re getting ready to bolt it to tranny and put it on K member and cradle.

I’ve also been working to reupholster bucket seats with new foam inserts as well. I’m just waiting for weather to warm up a bit so vinyl will stretch easier rather than taking over dining room table.

I just ordered stage 2 kit from Original Air Group for my engine bay AC components. I hop to have that come in the next 2 weeks so the compressor can be mounted to engine before going in car.

My goal is still to have car on road this year so lots to do. More updates to come.

Sweet car! Looks fantastic!!!

Glad you got the wiring figured out.

Wow! Very nice! How difficult was it installing the C-stripe?

Wow! Very nice! How difficult was it installing the C-stripe?

Thanks. I actually had a local guy put on the stripes for me who is experienced with these type of things. I helped him, but now that I’ve seen it done I don’t think it’s beyond my capabilities. Just need to make sure you have extra help and keeping it wet for positioning time. I also learned there are definitely differences in quality of these stripes. You get what you pay for does come into play. I shopped around for my stripes to save a little cash and found that the printed edges of the stripes weren’t as smooth as they could have been. My installer explained that the lower cost guys don’t use the higher quality printers so the edge line points are farther apart and if you look close enough the radius edges aren’t as smooth as they could be. Kinda hard to explain but if you really have to look closely to see it.

I’m finally done building kitchen cabinets for a friend so now I can get back to working on the car. Cabinets took longer than I thought, but he was really happy with them so it was worth it.

Engine and tranny are bolted together and put on k frame. Also got my stage 2 AC kit so compressor is bolted on as well. Pretty close to installing it in car.

After 6+ months at plater due to covid related delays, I finally got my rear bumper back. Turned out really nice. I plan on bolting it to car tomorrow.

Decided to work on reupholstering the buddy seat tonight after work.

I need to see where I can get some staples for finishing the wrap on the upper cushion.

The original foam was still in really good condition so no need to replace it, just pull on new skin. I even found original trim ID tag inside so I put it back inside new vinyl.

Wrinkles should come out when I stretch and staple rear sections.

Moved onto lower cushion and foam was also still in good condition. Recovering these pieces turned out really easy. It’s a nice change and a small victory.

Convinced my brother to stop over and help me today. Got everything connected under dash so it could be bolted down and got rear bumper installed today.

I’m also getting closer to having buckets recovered. I might try and install front carpet tomorrow after golfing with the boys.

When I was in high school, my friend had a 383 4 speed B5 blue Super Bee, with the white C stripes. It was a non vynal top car with a blue interior. He had old school torque thrust wheels on it. It was a sweet ride. Your car reminds me of his old car. Nice work, it's really coming together very nicely!

Made some progress this weekend. Got front section of carpet installed and put buddy and passenger side bucket seats in.

My brother and I were able to get rear end installed as well. Still have to tighten everything up before putting rear wheels on.
