I'm looking to convert my '70 Charger from a 727 to a Tremec 5 speed. I want to retain the center console. I have a "Want ad" asking about the 4 speed top plate but I am curious about how it might be cheaper to modify an A/T plate to work instead of an original 4 speed plate.
I'm not looking for a 100% stock appearance. I just need to know if the 4 speed shifter hole is close in location to the A/T shifter openings.

I think it will look pretty butchered if you go that way kern dog. I’d look for a manual for it, maybe even a beat up one for free just for a sample to “fit it”. Glad to hear gonna be rowing the boat! Probably gonna have to spring for a new or gently used one.

I plan to dechrome the top panels anyway, maybe by painting them semi-gloss black. The woodgrain looks out of place to me in a car that has no woodgrain anywhere else. I am thinking of using some pebble grained plastic similar to what the dash panels have:

Please! Don't butcher up what you have there. (No offense, my wordage isn't aways proper), Id try find one that's in worse shape than yours. Someome like myself will pay decent $$ for those console top plates. I think the '68 (Charger/Coronet) plates would look killer in your quest, since they're just lined, solid more "Space Age" so to say?
Painted BLACK against what you have would be killer. With just the rubber boot.
Just my 2 cents..

If it were me, I'd seriously consider building your second car- the 383-2 car as you'd have optioned it.

Keep the "done" one, well... done.

I like the idea of the 1968 pieces but being ONE year only, I'd have to guess that they'd be pricey !
I don't intend to modify the parts that I have. They will likely go into the other car.

Kern dog start with a piece of cardboard or fiber board , then to a aluminum plate and maybe move up to something you could machine in mill and give it a look that is way different and you won’t ruin anything.. 1/4 thick plate of aluminum? Then machine it however you please!
