My guess is that the small amount of grease or lube on the end of the shaft when inserted from new, has gone hard or solidified just enough to create the resistance you encountered while attempting removal. Heat and time on the shaft from the current flow through the switch after 50 years will have an effect.Going to pick up a new switch here in a couple three hours! Mines to nasty to take pics, it's a grossly dirty unit!
