Remembering back in the 70's with fuel crisis. My old company started buying/storing diesel slightly before the crisis really hit. 100-300k gallons up in Cleveland to draw off of, well, they waited too long to start drawing off the stockpile. 'Growth' started in the tanks, and when it came down the pipeline it clogged up our primary filters that were as big around as a normal human body and 7' tall. Suck it all back out from underground tanks and clean it all out before putting it back in circulation. Just a word of warning for the diesel guys(farmers) out there. Way too many engines quit running within way too few miles from clogged f.filters.

No.2 Fuel Oil/Diesel fuel will start to grow icky stuff in it if not used or circulated & filtered.
Alot of people in the Midwest found out about that when they switched from No.2 heating
oil to Natural gas to heat their homes. The No.2 sat in the old tanks for years, and one by
one, people wanted the tanks removed. Guys figured they could burn it in their trucks, so
they pumped it in and the troubles began!

Diesel in storage must be "polished" if stored. In other words it gets filtered and treated so algae doesnt grow.

use a bio-cid additive . for diesel that is what i use in all my trucks.

As I said it needs to be treated.
But in storage or in large generators (Cat/Cummins, etc) it needs to be "polished" or filtered periodically.

Ya you have to be careful. I have 2 2100 gal tanks for my generators and have my fuel supplier sample it ever year. The tanks are about 4 yrs old and my reports always came back within normal limits. For shits and grins I had my diesel service company do the same analysis and came back with 10% water...come to find out the dumbass taking the samples was not pulling from the bottom of the tank. Ended up having a company come out and polish the fuel using a centrifuge. Could not beleive the amount of water in there and my tanks are above ground...

A couple years ago at work they called out the genset service company because the engine wouldn't start.
Come to find out they hadnt kept the fuel tank full. The genset ran every Tuesday for 30 min. Nobody thought to check the fuel.
Cue Karl Childers...."it aint got no gas in it".
