For me it's always the transmission crossmember. Get out the putty knife, razor blade, screwdriver, every heavy duty cleaning aid but the hammer & chisel. Makes me want to invest in a power washer some day.

Agreed.

It is the automotive catch basin for coolant, power steering oil, motor oil, transmission oil, mud, roadkill, and road silt.

It is always willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to keep the driveshaft nice and clean.

After oven cleaner, pressure washing, and a lacquer thinner bath, I still had an internal grease fire when welding on a skid plate.

My 67 GTX had the whole K member and suspension caked in oil and dirt that stuck to it. Previous owner must have dumped the old oil from oil changes on the suspension. It really did preserve the metal, no pitting 50 years later.

I have to agree with the K member. 50+ years of oil changes, that sucker will NEVER rust.

Glad to know you meant car piece/part...

Where ever the socket falls is always the dirtiest area !

Definately the transmission on cars with 4-bolt valve cover big blocks. I have 3 on the floor that are so coated in grease they must weigh 50 lbs. more than clean transmissions.

After 50 years this is the rear end of my 63 Belvedere when I got it.I needed a jackhammer just to find the nuts.

Greasy parts are well preserved parts! I look for starters for awhile and found the worse it looked the better my chances it wasn’t thru a rebuilder... I was after part and date code numbers.. BUT it historically correct when you drop a tool that’s where your going to find it!

Is that crossmember for sale?

Not for sale, my two '65's have had both crossmembers modified by TTI for dual exhaust clearances.

I’m always on the lookout for them, I do the conversions as well!
