I have attempted to tune this vgc E 1407 at least 4 times. All parts renewed. Today I re-checked the float levels and set them correctly to 7/16", tried to start the engine, and no go, plus backfire. Took off the top again and found fuel everyplace, including in the wells for the secondary counterweights. See photos.
Also, new fuel pump puts out 7-8psi, and I could not make a flow regulator work, so now i have hose clamps on the final hose to reduce the pressure to around 6. Today those clamps were loose, and pressure 6-7.
All advice gratefully accepted!

If both floats are set to 7/16 and assuming niether have a leak I would remove both needle/seat assemblies and ensure they are perfectly clean before reinstalling.

15/16 drop with gasket in place. it sounds like you are pushing fuel past the needle and seat. you need to get the pressure down between 5 and 5.5. make sure they are clean of debris and not binding

If you check with Edelbrock's web, you will find they say 4 to 5 psi max if I remember correctly.Even as WP29440SE stated,6 or more will push fuel past the needle and flood.Just the characteristics of their brand. That too has to do with how accurate the pressure gauge is.
I have run my race engines with AFB's. 4 psi without a problem.

X3 on the lower pressure. 4# is plenty with a Carter/Edelbrock.

Depending on your altitude, the float level should be reduced a smidge. Here at 4000', my carb builder buddy said that the stock settings allowed carbs to flood. He sets them lower, and all is well.

7/16" upside down
15/16" right side up, hanging
Check both needles and seats
6 psi should not be enough to blow past the needles. I run 6psi regulated to my AVS without issue.

Not sure what this means but I think you need a regulator.
A Carter AFB essentially the same thing is calibrated for 5 PSI.
X2 Hose clamp on the line for a pressure regulator?

I also have a pump rated for 7-8 psi and an AFB and have no trouble with it. I had no fuel lines at all when building it so when I made them up I used 3/8 from the pump to carb, I think the factory used 5/16. I forget who I talked to, either the speed shop I got it from or carter, and was told the 3/8 from pump to carb may help to mitigate the extra pressure. Not completely sold on that but it's been running like a raped ape since.

I'm thinking he needs to verify pressure while driving and to maybe try another gauge. Too much pressure is the cause of his flooding unless he is missing a needle / jammed open.

My racecar runs 6 psi with the floats set a 5/16". They will hold to 7 easily. Either your pressure is much higher, the needle and seat is leaking, one or both of the floats are fuel logged, or the gasket(s) under the seat(s) are leaking (or the seat(s) arent tight.

Why is the pressure so high on all the replacement fuel pumps now days? I just had to put a new fuel pump on mine because my original was leaking out of the top weep hole. I got a Carter replacement from my local parts place. It reads 8.5 psi. The leaking factory pump was 6.5psi.

Thanks to all. I reduced the pressure, temporarily, by inserting narrow diameter plugs into the hose. It now reads 6.5, but I am sure that the flow is less. Runs much better, no flooding, no gas exuding everyplace. A new dial type regulator arrives tomorrow, will let you know how that works. Thanks again BB!

the dial type regulator works exceptionally well for me.

I obtained another pressure valve from eBay. the 2-6psi regulators all look alike, and sure enough, this 3rd example suffered from incorrect threads, and metric wrenches needed. I dressed the threads a bit, installed it, and it works well and does not leak. So far the car starts and runs so much better! Thanks again to all.

Need more help, please: Car still starts roughly, but when warmed a bit, runs fine and strong. But...i live on a hill. If i accelerate up the hill the engine will falter and stall at the top. Yesterday, almost cranked the battery dead before it restarted. Fuel seen in clear filter, pressure set at 4, floats checked at least 4x. Help!!
