Hello sages,

Is it possible to do this mod?

I have a lathe and can probably nibble ~3/8" off each axle for fitment.

Is this do able or not recommended?
Thanks,

Greg

I'd say yes. Before aftermarket axles were around, many would cut C body axles down.
Many aftermarket axles are cut to fit and have extra length splines.
Check your spline length and make sure engagement into side spider gears is enough.
P.S. Is this Greg from Irwin with the famous RUSTER ?

As long as you have enough spline, yes. They are easy to cut square. Go to Lowe’s or Home Depot and get the large abrasive cut off blade about $10. Put it in a power mitre saw. Use light pressure takes a little while but makes a nice square cut.

65-67 is the easiest to find and the cheapest.

Nearly every V8 66 and nearly every 66/67 Charger got one.

I tried this once.
The axle shafts necked down inboard of the splines so cutting them back only served to allow LESS spline engagement.
I cut some down to the shorter size but didn't feel right about it. Yeah, they would have fitted but with almost 1/3 of the spline cut off, I didn't think it would be safe.

You would need to chop 5/16" off each axle. This would probably work with an open differential or a late Sure-Grip with the one-piece side gears but, on the early Sure-Grip with two-piece side gears, the shortened axle wouldn't engage the inner gear.

I've been thinking about you. Nice to see you here.
Yes, you are famous with the Slant Six crowd. Not many of us though.
What ya working on ?

Got it.
Well I have none of the above.. Running an eaton Tru trac torsen style.. so I have some figurin to do.

I am just being cheap / lazy as have the redone the axles U have with proper studs, new bearings / seals etc.

Should be ok with the tru trac. Just measure that the splines will go in far enough and housing depth will be ok so the axles boult in without bottoming before the bolts are drawn in.
I'm all for using what ya got.
