Machine gun tips

Any reasoning why some were black instead of orange
Probably a different vendor that's all. I have never seen a production car with black tips... But have seen plenty of Nos spot welded tips in black over the years...

Not exactly sure what the fascination is with "exhaust pipe machine gun tips"? ...sort of an oxymoron..... personally, i would prefer anonymity or a low profile rather than "advertising" what my car is all about....
Just my opinion of course.

Well Bob, some people like a bit of flash to make their cars look less like the base models.

Sort of .... but not quite.....the strip was part of the trim package (GTX) perhsps not optional like the exhaust pipe ends..... but....to each his/het own tastes....

I believe the machine gun tips were the coolest exhaust tip ever made across the entire muscle car lineup

The 71's were all about flash. I agree the tips fit right in with the theme.

but the strip could be deleted as option ( as far I recall... )

If someone could make a machine gun tip that has a removable outer slotted case so that the inner pipe paint could be maintained that would be trick and maybe add some faux spot welds as well.

I'm working on that... but want to find somebody able to apply a high temp powder coat in Venezuela.

The outer shell could be attached to the rear section, just like resonators are to the pipes

Has anyone ever restored a factory tip by separating the outer shell from the inner pipe ?

I'll do it on the Repro I got from PG... Oh... well, my car is in Vzla being worked yet and I'm in Spain but I gave the order to cut the welded spots and separate the pieces to try to refinish ine inner red pipe.

I thought I would include pictures of the original exhaust. mufflers, resonators and tips on my 73 Roadrunner GTX "U" Code. I have since replaced all with accurate exhaust pieces.

Bought these about 10 years ago when there weren't many options. All stainless 3 inch exterior and the insert is not stainless. I'm disassembling so I can paint the insert. When they go back together I'll use set screws instead of welding.

Did they use any spot welds on those or just a mig weld bead

The mild steel insert (orange) had 4 spot welds to the slotted tip. The 2 stainless halves had 4 welds approx. 1/2 inch long.
