70 Radio Conversion Help

I’m hoping someone can help me troubleshoot a conversion radio issue I’m having. I bought this radio from another member here that had it updated/converted by ward but never installed it in his car before selling the project.

As far as I can tell I’ve connected the radio exactly like the instructions called out, but I’m not getting any sound out of the speakers. When I initially found the issue I was able to exchange emails with Greg Ward even though they are no longer in business. One item I had to correct was removing the speakers and installing rubber bushings/isolators to prevent the speaker frames from touching sheet metal in rear package tray and dash frame. I guess this prevents grounding which would cause the radio to not operate properly. I’ve never heard of this being an issue, but I did what he recommended.

The back and LED lights come on just as instructions describe. I also confirmed I’m getting 12 volts to power wire on radio coming from fuse box. I tried using FM radio as well as the mp3 jacks, no sound either way.

I pulled radio back out of car tonight and opened it up just to see if any of the wires were loose or disconnected but everything looks connected.

Has anyone had the same issue or know what could cause no sound? This is the last electrical issue I need to solve before I can bolt in the dash the rest of the way and finish off interior.

Don't know what type of speakers you have in your car, but I have never seen speakers that have either of the two connection terminals for the voice coil electrically connected to the speakers frame or basket. Perhaps the speakers you have is strangely different than typical speakers. That could be easily proven with a ohm meter. That's the only reason I would see the need to insulate he speakers from the cars frame.
I would suggest that you get some clip leads remove your speakers and /or get some other speakers and try make it work on your bench off a 12 V battery or external 12 VDC. power supply rather than messing with it in the car. You could use a clip lead connected to the center terminal of the antenna jack which should be adequate to hear some local stations. Does this radio only have provisions for 2 speakers, L & R front stereo , or 4 speakers L & R stereo front and L & R stereo rear ? Or is it mono front and mono rear ? If you can make it work on the bench that will at least eliminate what may be going on in the in the car.

Twecomm, I have common Sony rear speakers and a retro sound front speaker. The radio has provisions for four speakers L & R for each in stereo. I will try what you suggested on the bench to see if there’s any change. Thanks for the feedback.
