Trouble with propane tanks and bar-b-que stuff...

Have you tried resetting the regulator?

There is a procedure to do this if necessary - a regulator will 'trip' if the gas comes in a rush....and the result is a very small flame.

Just saying in case this is where you are heading. :)

It happened to me twice....the first time, I went to the Gas Station and got a fresh bottle....an expensive lesson.

And turn your grill off before shutting off the bottle/tank. I used to turn off the bottle first and let the flame go out. Thought that was the better way to do this, then realised the next time I used it it was burning slower or a low flame. Upon researching the problem I found it was screwing with the safety valve/regulator.

Make sure you always open the tank valve slowly, also open it all the way and then turn back 1/4-1/2 from full open. Another possibility, since it has happened on a couple of different tanks for you, is contamination from where you are getting your tanks filled.
 
I put on an adjustable regulator, can really turn up the heat. I found about the safety inside the regulator after filling the tank. Called local hardware store where they fill tanks. Woman that answered told about it, shut the tank and burners and slowly open tank valve. A little slice of humble pie please.

I agree. If you open the tank valve too quickly, the safety valve senses a big leak and shuts down. If that happens, close the tank valve, crack the fitting loose at the tank to vent it, you'll hear a slight psst. retighten the fitting and open the valve slowly. You should then have gas flow to the burners.

I have to admit though, I've not had that problem since I got rid of my OLD grill and bought a Weber several years ago.
 
Same thing with Oxy/acetylene tank regulators and any other high pressure regs. If you just open up the bottle quickly, you can mess up the regulator. Whenever I have someone over here doing something and I don't know them very well, I give them a quick schooling about this stuff.
 
I bought one about three years ago. Only the center of the charcoal will stay lit, around the outside goes out. You can set the vents however you like, no change.
The legs are flimsy, also.
A friend has an older one and it seems to be made much better and you can close the vents down and it burns for hours.

I got one of those Weber 'basketball' grilles some years back and didn't really care for it. Seems like you got to put in a lot of charcoal to get it to burn evenly and that's if you start them up right. I like to build a small Old Smokey from Stainless Steel because I like the way they cook but they just don't last long enough and especially so if you leave them out in the weather lol. Garbage sales and Estate sales usually turn them up but they are usually already on the down hill run but if they are 5 bucks, I'll snag it and buy a new cooking grille for it from Academy. They don't fit exact but good enough. The biggest downside to them imo is the gauge of the metal.....
 
I cooked a duck on a gas grill once and the grease from the duck filled all the holes in the burners. The next time I went to use the grill I could hear the gas but it would never light. Soaked all the burners in hot soapy water. Tried it again and about 1/4 of the holes would light. Next time nothing. Soaked the burners again and about 1/4 would light but different holes. Hauled the gas grill to the dump. Been using charcoal ever since
